🎃What traditions does your country have for Halloween? I live in Wales. Although Wales is part of the United Kingdom, we're a bit different and distinct from our friends in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. While many Halloween traditions, such as trick or treating can be found across the country, I can say that Wales does have its own unique rituals. For starters, it is important to note that the Welsh celebrate November 1 as Calan Gaeaf, which is considered to be the first day of winter. The night before that is called Nos Galan Gaeaf, an Ysbrydnos or a “spirit night.” This is pretty much exactly what it sounds like, which is why the Welsh believe in staying away from churchyards, crossroads, and other places where spirits👻 are believed to gather. Here are some examples of Welsh traditions regarding Nos Galan Gaeaf: 🎃Coelcerth - A fire was built, with everyone placing a stone with their name on it, around the fire. If anyone's stone was missing the following morning, they would die the following year. 🎃Touching ground ivy was thought to make you have nightmares about hags and witches. 🎃In order to see into the future, boys would place leaves of ivy under their pillows and girls would grow a rose around a large hoop, which they would jump through three times before cutting the rose and placing it under their pillow. 🎃In Pembrokeshire (county in the south-west of Wales), if people looked into a mirror on Halloween, they would see witches and demons in their sleep. https://t.me/LanguageStuff
