Nowhere to Run... At the opening of the World Climate Conference, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) reported that 86 million refugees have suffered from droughts and heat, and a total of 117 million people were displaced in 2025. The UN notes a double threat to refugees — war and climate change. According to the Geneva-based refugee agency, for many of them there is virtually no way to escape. Three quarters of all refugees live in countries vulnerable to climate disasters. Moreover, many of the world’s largest refugee settlements are located in regions with extremely harsh and dangerous weather conditions. Refugee aid organizations are calling for an increase in assistance to affected countries. In Belém, representatives of 190 countries are discussing whether enough is being done to curb global warming. IDMC (2024): 83.4M displaced — 73.5M conflict, 9.8M disasters. World Bank: by 2050, 216M could move internally; Africa — 86M.
