'Are we going backwards from whatever we gained in terms of achieving a casteless society?' Supreme Court Stays UGC Equity Regulations 2026. β’ On January 29, 2026, the Supreme Court (bench: CJI Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi) stayed the UGC (Promotion of Equity in Higher Education Institutions) Regulations, 2026, keeping them in abeyance. β’ The Court found the rules prima facie vague and capable of misuse, and discriminatory toward general category students. It issued notice to the Union government and UGC (returnable March 19) and directed that the 2012 UGC Regulations continue in force meantime. β’ The decision came on petitions by Mritunjay Tiwari, Vineet Jindal, and Rahul Dewan challenging the regulations' constitutionality. The Court suggested revisiting them, possibly via a committee of eminent jurists.
