BAND 8.0 The media pay too much attention to the lives and relationships of celebrities such as actors, singers or footballers. They should spend more time reporting the lives of ordinary people instead. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Today’s media is seemingly shifting from a source of news to that of drama, overwhelmingly covering stories of celebrity life when they should be paying as much attention to ordinary people. However, I believe that current practices are justified for the right reasons. There are several reasons why ordinary people deserve the spotlight, too. Usually, their problems simply get brushed under the rug by city officials and other bodies of the government. Therefore, it is the news outlets that could raise public awareness of the certain pressing issues people from the lower classes are facing. Take farm workers, for example. They could certainly use some help from the level of attention that comes with news coverage, where their problems of exploitation and abuse could be highlighted. It is common knowledge that these workers are put under horrendous conditions in their day-to-day lives to make a minimal living, and publicly displaying these on a large scale in every news channel across the world could mean that their problems are at least minimized. In addition, giving people the right to speak out is likely to make them feel appreciated. In other words, an average citizenwho would otherwise be dismissed without any platform could be taken more seriously now that they are shown on the news. Clearly, it is the public that is fully aware of all the societal problems raging in their country. This knowledge, if promoted on a large enough scale, could go a long way in solving such issues as racism and poverty. As simple as it may be to decide the working methods of news outlets for them, I believe that the picture is far from complete. Shifting from celebrity coverage to that of ordinary could spell disasters for the businesses responsible for reporting the stories. There is clearly little demand for the problems that an ordinary person faces. After all, the news is what it is with glamor and drama that is embedded in it. This means that people will simply not engage in any stories where the main subject is someone of the same caliber as them. Rather, it is the juicy titbits of the lives of internationally renowned figures that seem to keep viewers at the edge of their seats. Without these enticing themes, news outlets are bound to go out of businesses due to the decreasing rate of views. Moreover, celebrity stories are the main revenue stream for media businesses. When Will Smith, a Hollywood actor with global recognition, acted out at an Oscarevent by slappinga fellow comedian for his unsolicited remarks on Will’s wife, the whole mediaworld rushed to cover this story as extensively as possible. Those that accomplished this goal certainly made millions, the amount that they are simply unable to earn should they focus their efforts on ordinary people. Thus, it makes sense that today’s media aspires to take advantage of the monetary benefits associated with its overwhelming attention to celebrity life. In conclusion, some might feel that media outlets these days are not doing justice to the public by overly focusing on the lives of big names, casting a long shadow over rather unexciting subjects. Despite this, I would argue that this practice should be justified, as the media is simply trying to survive and thrive. (553 words, 34 minutes) #classwork#media Written by @ieltsulugbeks

CBS News’s 60 Minutes did not spare President Donald Trump’s administration in its Sunday story about ICE shootings that was titled after questions posed by Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY): “Who can you kill and when can you kill them?” Paul asked the questions after the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti as he announced he has scheduled a public hearing in Minneapolis later this month. Host Scott Pelley said Paul told him that he watched the video of Pretti being shot “again and again.” “I saw no evidence. I saw a man that was retreating,” Paul said. “I mean, he went to the middle of the street. He didn’t even obstruct traffic. He let a car go through. As the agents advanced on him, he retreated to the side of the street. A woman is violently pushed to the ground, and he turns to help her, and that’s when he is grabbed from behind. I saw no evidence of him assaulting the police.” When asked if Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem should be fired, Paul answered, “I think we have to get through our hearing February 12, and I think we have to see what the people who work for her say. But my advice to them, if they’re watching and they come to testify is, if you come in and you’re going to justify that this man was aggressively assaulting your police officers, that cannot be acceptable, and that’s why they’re lacking in trust.” Paul said that Noem, Border Patrol officer Greg Bovino, FBI Director Kash Patel, and White House advisor Stephen Miller used “terrible judgment” when they called the victims domestic terrorists and assassins. “I mean, terrible conclusions, incorrect conclusions, stating things that no one else believes. You can lie to your heart’s content if there’s no video, but the video doesn’t support what they’re saying,” Paul said. When Pelley asked, “You seem to be saying trust is broken?” Paul answered, “Without question.” #ICE#Media 👂More on Trump's Ear ⚠️

They are hired by ICE without filling out questionnaires, drug testing, or other mandatory checks. The famous progressive journalist Laura Jedeed tried to get a job at ICE and received a job offer without checking her documents and biography, writes (https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2026/01/ice-recruitment-minneapolis-shooting.html #) Slate. In August, she came to the ICE Career Fair in Texas out of professional interest. The interview lasted about six minutes. The recruiter asked questions about his age, military experience and desired place of service. The interview did not touch on other topics. #ICE#Media 👂More on Trump's Ear ⚠️
