🎙Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s remarks at an extended meeting with the participation of the Foreign Ministers from the Global South and the Global East(June 11, 2024, Nizhny Novgorod)
💬 Welcome to Russia and Nizhny Novgorod, a beautiful city, the beauty of which and the feelings of the residents of which you had the chance to enjoy yesterday.
Today’s meeting reflects the efforts of #BRICS members to develop ties with the stakeholder countries from the Global South and the Global East, the countries of the Global Majority,
in order to identify solutions to the most pressing global issues faced by all members of the international community without exception.
We are witnessing a profound transformation of international relations triggered by the formation of a fairer and polycentric system of international order, which would reflect the entire gamut of cultural and civilisational diversity of the modern-day world and ensure the right of every nation to determine its own future and its own path of development.
The stronger voice of the Global Majority, i.e. the countries of Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America and the Caribbean, which are not part of the collective West, is a major trend now.
Only by uniting our ranks can we truly effectively promote a vision of a just future shared by all of us. In this context, it is important to strengthen the role of the country-to-country groups that advocate balanced and equitable approaches to international development.
We are talking about the formats which reflect the principles of equitable cooperation in practice rather than in words. These include, along with BRICS, #SCO, #AfricanUnion, #EAEU, #CIS, #ASEAN, #LAS, #CELAC, #GCC, #IORA and many other organisations. The chairs of many of these organisations are here with us.
We believe it is important to establish contacts between all such integration entities which operate at regional levels, on the one hand, and our global association BRICS, on the other hand. This will promote gradual and mutually respectful harmonisation of approaches to the issues facing all associations.
The strengthening the international legal framework and collective decision-making on global issues is now at the forefront. Only in this case will those decisions be effective and legitimate.
This principle is laid down in the UN Charter. Unfortunately, the collective West’s decisions, especially in the economy, finance, trade and more, increasingly fail to comply with the fundamental principles of the UN Charter.
Our countries have largely overlapping approaches to reforming the system of multilateral institutions, including the UN and the UN Security Council, as well as addressing the post-pandemic recovery of the global economy and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals approved by the UN General Assembly.
🤝 We look forward to discussing all these issues today.

🇿🇦 This year’s opening meeting of the #G20 Foreign Ministers as part of the debut presidency of South Africa – a friendly country whose stance is in accord with #Russia’s – will take place in Johannesburg on February 20-21, a landmark event not only for Pretoria, but also for the entire African continent, which will host G20 events for the first time.
🇷🇺 Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov plans to lead the Russian delegation. It is expected that most of the members of this major economic forum, as well as a wide range of invited states and international organisations, will be represented at a similar level.
☝️ The meeting will open with an address by President of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa, which will set the general tone for discussing global challenges and threats. The discussion will particularly focus on the international situation, which is alarmingly deteriorating under the impact of the confrontational policy by the neoliberal Western elites.
The participants will consider the current integrity and effective functioning of the global economic system. The priorities stated by the South African presidency are designed to encourage economic growth, reduce inequality and imbalances, and ensure equitable access to financing for countries in the Global South.
🤝 The South African presidency theme highlighting “solidarity, equality and sustainability” will provide solid framework for the consultations, essentially continuing in the same vein as its predecessors in 2022-2024 – Indonesia, India and Brazil, all of them Global Majority countries. In particular, this refers to the G20’s significant contribution during this period to strengthening the foundations of the multipolar world and making global economic institutions more democratic in the interests of new non-Western centres of influence, primarily the expanded #BRICS group.
❗️The upcoming anniversaries, such as the 80th anniversary of Victory in World War II and the foundation of the #UN, as well as the 65th anniversary of the Russia-sponsored Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples adopted by the UN General Assembly to ensure Africa’s independence, should be seen as key benchmarks for the exchange of views.
👉 In his remarks, the Minister will provide a detailed analysis of the international situation underscoring the root causes of the current crisis, and outline specific steps to overcome the destructive phenomena. The Russian side will reaffirm its stance in favour of preserving the United Nations’ central role in global affairs. We will speak in support of strict compliance with the principles of the UN Charter in their entirety and interconnection.
We will insist that there is no alternative to respectful interstate cooperation and ensuring equal and indivisible security for all. We will call for keeping the global economy open, rejecting trade wars, illegitimate sanctions and other unfair competition practices. We will cite examples of supranational associations that practice honest and productive cooperation without diktat or blackmail, such as the #EAEU, the #SCO and #BRICS. We will share the details of implementing the Russia-sponsored Greater Eurasian Partnership initiative.
The Minister is expected to meet with several counterparts on the sidelines of the meeting.

Key points
#UkraineCrisis#KievRegimeCrimes
• [Following the Kiev regime attack on Russia’s President’s state residence in the Novgorod Region] many countries could once again see the terrorist nature of Zelensky’s clique <…> Terrorism in any form is unacceptable and certainly does not help achieve a political and diplomatic solution to the conflict. Kiev is only making matters worse for itself with its recklessness and impeding efforts to find possible compromises.
• The deployment of military units, facilities, warehouses and other infrastructure of the Western countries in Ukraine <…> will be considered as foreign intervention that directly threatens Russia’s security.
#Multipolarity
• The situation surrounding Denmark’s northern autonomous territory vividly demonstrates the bankruptcy of the so-called “rules-based international order” so dear to many in the West.
• Cooperation is being actively forged in formats with limited membership. Alongside the CIS, mechanisms such as the #EAEU, #BRICS, #SCO, #ASEAN, #LAS, #GCC, the #AfricanUnion, and #CELAC, among others, maintain momentum. <...> We regard these developments as part of the historically determined process of shaping a multipolar world order, which will lead to the further consolidation of several global and an even greater number of regional centres of power and development.
#InternationalSecurity
• The international security system is indeed undergoing a period of profound transformation today. This is driven by two primary factors: the objective processes shaping a polycentric world order, and attempts to substitute international law with the law of the mightiest.
• Relying on force as the primary instrument in foreign policy and undermining of the existing institutional and legal framework of international relations risks chaos and escalating confrontation, <...> increase of the likelihood of direct clashes between major states, including nuclear powers. Under these conditions, developments become highly unpredictable.
• Russia firmly opposes this scenario. We are capable of defending our interests – history provides ample evidence of this. Our country has traditionally played a stabilising and balancing role in global affairs.
#RussiaUS
• Following Donald Trump’s return to the White House, the Presidents of Russia and the US <...> agreed to maintain a high tempo of work. This was founded upon a mutual understanding of the necessity to rid ourselves as soon as possible of the “toxic legacy” of the Joe Biden administration. <...> Our American counterparts made it clear: great powers, when their national interests diverge <...> must not allow differences to escalate into confrontation.
• President Donald Trump is perhaps one of the few Western politicians who not only immediately rejected imposing meaningless and destructive preconditions for substantive dialogue with Moscow on the Ukraine crisis but also publicly addressed its root causes.
• It was precisely the elimination of these root causes that was discussed in Anchorage on August 15, 2025. <...> We anticipate that, provided the original Anchorage formula is preserved and Russian interests are handled with due care, we can, sooner or later, come close to a negotiated resolution of the Ukraine issue.
#Iran
• We strongly condemn subversive external interference in Iran’s domestic political processes. <...> Threats of new military strikes against the Islamic Republic of Iran are absolutely unacceptable.
• Those who intend to exploit foreign-inspired unrest as a pretext to repeat the aggression against Iran <...> must clearly understand the catastrophic consequences such actions would have for the situation in the Middle East and for international security as a whole.
@RusEmbMalta Press release:
🇷🇺🇦🇲🇰🇿🇰🇬🇧🇾EAEU Turns 10: A Decade of Integration and Growth
On May 29, 2014, the Treaty on the Establishment of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) was signed – marking the beginning of a new era of economic integration across Eurasia.
Over the past decade, the Union’s five member states – Russia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Belarus – have achieved remarkable results:
📈 In 2024, mutual trade within the EAEU reached nearly $100 billion
💱 Over 90% of settlements were made in national currencies
🌐 International cooperation is expanding rapidly
🔄 The internal market is functioning and evolving steadily
🤝 The EAEU demonstrates resilience amid global turbulence, offering a stable and non-discriminatory framework built on equality, mutual respect, and benefit.
Today, the EAEU is a growing center of gravity in international economic relations:
🌍 Four observer states – Uzbekistan, Cuba, Iran and Moldova
🤝 Free trade agreements with Vietnam, Iran, and Serbia
🤝 Non-preferential trade agreement with China
📜 Over 80 cooperation MoUs through the Eurasian Economic Commission
🪙Trade talks are underway with Indonesia, the UAE, Egypt, India, Mongolia, and others
🇱🇧 We welcome potential interest from our Lebanese friends in partnering with the Union.
Russia remains a consistent supporter of deeper coordination between the EAEU and other regional structures – including the CIS, ASEAN, and SCO – as part of building a Greater Eurasian Partnership, an idea first proposed by President Vladimir Putin in 2015.
🔗 The EAEU today stands as a model of successful integration – based on trust, equality, and shared benefit. We thank our partners and the Eurasian Economic Commission for their continued cooperation, and we look forward to unlocking even greater potential together – for the benefit of our peoples and businesses.

Key points:
#BilateralTrade
🔸️Over the past two years, the annual trade turnover between #Russia and #Pakistan has amounted to approximately $1 billion USD. Our governments understand that this figure does not reflect our countries' existing potential, and they are making efforts to deepen bilateral cooperation. One effective mechanism in this regard is the Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, and Technical Cooperation, which will hold its 10th milestone meeting in November 2025 in Islamabad;
🔸️There is potential for increased fuel, petroleum products, and grain supplies from Russia to Pakistan, as well as for increased imports of Pakistani textiles, leather, and agricultural products to Russia;
#JointProjects
🔸️We are considering a number of infrastructure projects, including the modernization or construction of a new Karachi Steel Mill and railway tracks, as well as the supply of Russian pharmaceutical products, with the option of joint production;
🔸️We look forward to implementing new projects in the energy and transportation sectors. Given the recent establishment of diplomatic relations between Pakistan and Armenia, we believe that a free trade agreement between Pakistan and the #EAEU is possible in the future;
🔸️The successful modernization of the Karachi Steel Mill will pave the way for more productive cooperation;
#TradeInNationalCurrencies
🔸️Most of Russia's export operations with friendly countries, including #SCO member states, are conducted in national currencies. The US dollar is slowly but surely losing ground. The process of diversifying payment instruments is succeeding;
#SituationInTheRegion
🔸️Russia respects the right of regional countries, including Pakistan, to choose their own foreign policy partners independently. South Asian countries' engagement with the West is an internal matter. However, we consider it inappropriate if such engagement is directed against any state or group of states;
🔸️We have noted the Americans' and their NATO allies' active efforts to return to #Afghanistan after their infamous retreat in 2021. Donald Trump's statements about the U.S.'s desire to retake control of the #Bagram Air Base and his demands that India stop purchasing Russian oil are unacceptable. They represent yet another manifestation of Western neocolonialism;
🔸️The recent SCO summit in China demonstrated the declining influence of extra-regional forces. There is a growing demand for Russian President Vladimir Putin's initiative to establish a Eurasian security system based on the principle of "regional solutions to regional problems;"
#MoscowFormat
🔸️The Moscow Format Consultations bring together all of Afghanistan's neighboring countries, including Russia and Pakistan. This regional mechanism has proven its effectiveness. All its members agree that the return of U.S. and NATO military infrastructure to Afghanistan is unacceptable;
#Kashmir
🔸️Pakistan and India inherited the Kashmir issue from their British colonial past. We believe that Islamabad and New Delhi should resolve their differences through political and diplomatic means. At the same time, if it receives appropriate signals from both sides, Russia is ready to contribute to improving relations between the two countries and make the necessary efforts in international forums, including the #UN.

⚡️ Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’sstatement and answers to questions at the Government Hour hearings during a plenary session of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation (February 11, 2026):
Key takeaways:
• The world is undergoing a long-term transition to a multipolar order, marked by growing competition between the Western minority and the World Majority.
• Western countries continue to pursue neo-colonial policies, double standards, and attempts to preserve dominance, including through pressure, destabilisation, and military actions.
• Russia views current global upheavals as part of a profound and lasting shift in international relations, not a temporary phase.
• Strategic stability is deteriorating due to Western actions, while Russia maintains responsible conduct and observes arms control limits as long as the US does the same.
• The Arctic should remain a zone of peace and cooperation; Russia will respond if military threats against it emerge there.
• Russia rejects Western double standards on self-determination, defending the choices of #Crimea, #Donbass, and #Novorossiya.
❗️A sustainable settlement in Ukraine is impossible without addressing root causes; understandings reached with the US in 2025 remain valid.
• Russia continues negotiations to ensure its security, protect Russian-speaking populations, and eliminate threats from the Kiev regime and its external sponsors.
• The comprehensive strategic partnership with #China is a stabilising factor in global affairs and a cornerstone of regional security.
• Strategic partnerships with #Belarus, the #DPRK, #Iran, the #CIS and the #CSTO members strengthen regional stability and Russia’s security.
• Russia is deepening ties across #Eurasia, including with India, Türkiye, the Arab world, Southeast Asia, and regional organisations such as the #EAEU, #SCO, and #ASEAN.
• The #Russia-#Africa partnership is expanding, with preparations underway for the Third Russia-Africa Summit.
• #BRICS is emerging as a key platform for the World Majority, promoting cooperation free from sanctions and Western restrictions.
• Russia supports #GlobalSouth efforts against modern forms of colonialism and unilateral coercive measures, including through new UN international days.

Embassy Comment
We have noted the article by Jonathan Eyal “#EU renewed toothless #sanctions against #Russia”, published in The Straits Times on February 1, 2025.
We agree with the author that the unilateral illegitimate sanctions aimed at continuing the hybrid war against Russia and inflicting a strategic defeat on us, are both unsuccessful and futile.
There is no doubt that the objectives of the special military operation (#SMO) on the #denazification and demilitarization of #Ukraine, its neutral and non-nuclear status, as well as ensuring the interests of the Russian people will be achieved.
The “bankrupt” Euro-Atlantic security architecture (#NATO) is being replaced by a new equal and indivisible #EurasianSecurity, which includes all the organizations that have demonstrated their effectiveness – the #EAEU, #SCO, #CSTO, etc.
The concept of #Eurasian security aligns with the accelerating formation of a multipolar world order. A key pillar of this shift is the rapidly growing, non-Western center of influence represented by #BRICS, which continues to attract countries from the #GlobalSouth, including #ASEAN member states, paving the way for a BRICS-ASEAN dialogue.
The consolidation of the countries of the Global South, making a choice in favor of peaceful, sustainable, inclusive, independent development together with Russia, China and other countries, represents a stable and viable trend in contrast to the outdated Western neocolonial “#InSanctionsWeTrust” mentality.
