Here’s what we worked on with our SCO entry aspirant. He has just started working on his communication after 16 years of service in the Indian Army. He is a work in progress but he will get there. This was the first time after 16 years that he got back into the classroom so naturally he felt a bit nervous. In the 15 days with us, he worked on his speaking skills and took feedback from us to work on. With a promise to return after a few months of working himself, he left for his unit with hopes of improvement in his eyes! Fresh batches starting from 16th January. How to Tackle Failures: Turning Setbacks into Strength “Failure is not the opposite of success; it is part of success.” Failure is an inevitable part of any meaningful journey. Whether it is an exam, an interview, a relationship, or a personal goal — failure tests not your talent, but your character, patience, and resilience. The way you respond to failure decides whether it becomes a roadblock or a stepping stone. 1. Accept Failure Without Self-Denial The first step is acceptance, not excuses. Denying failure delays growth, while accepting it brings clarity. * Say: “Yes, I failed.” * Avoid: “It wasn’t my fault” or “I was unlucky.” Acceptance reflects maturity and allows you to move forward with honesty. 2. Separate Failure from Identity You failed at something — you are not a failure. * A failed attempt ≠ failed person * A rejection ≠ lack of worth This distinction protects self-confidence and prevents self-doubt from becoming permanent. 3. Analyze, Don’t Agonize After accepting failure, shift from emotion to analysis. Ask yourself: * What exactly went wrong? * Was it lack of preparation, poor strategy, attitude, or discipline? * What was under my control, and what wasn’t? Analysis turns pain into insight. Overthinking turns pain into paralysis. 4. Extract the Lesson Every failure carries a lesson — but only if you look for it. * Failure teaches what doesn’t work * It reveals weak areas that success often hides * It builds humility and self-awareness Those who learn faster from failure grow faster in life. 5. Regulate Emotions, Don’t Suppress Them Feeling disappointed, sad, or frustrated is natural. Suppressing emotions leads to burnout; expressing them wisely leads to healing. * Talk to a trusted person * Write your thoughts * Channel emotions into physical activity like running or training Emotional balance restores mental strength. 6. Rebuild Confidence Through Action Confidence does not return through thinking — it returns through doing. * Start with small, achievable actions * Fix one habit or skill at a time * Show up daily, even when motivation is low Action creates momentum; momentum rebuilds belief. 7. Maintain Perspective Ask yourself: * Will this failure matter in 5 years? * What larger journey am I on? Most failures feel huge in the moment but small in the long run. Perspective keeps you grounded. 8. Use Failure as Fuel, Not Weight You can either: * Carry failure as a burden that slows you down, or * Use it as fuel that pushes you forward Many successful people are not those who never failed, but those who refused to quit after failing. 9. Failure in SSB and Life In SSB or any competitive path, failure shows: * Whether you can reflect honestly * Whether you can improve systematically * Whether you can stay calm under disappointment Assessors value candidates who show learning attitude and resilience, not perfection. Final Thought Failure is a test of temperament. It humbles you, teaches you, and strengthens you — if you let it. Those who rise after falling don’t just succeed — they mature. Mantra to Remember “Fall. Learn. Rise stronger.” #prepoflife@ssbclear
