🥷Arkham reveals the biggest Bitcoin theft in history In a new report, Arkham confirms that 127,426 BTC ($3.5B at the time, ~$14.5B now) were stolen from Chinese mining pool LuBian in December 2020. ➡️LuBian controlled ~6% of BTC hashrate in May 2020 ➡️ Attack began Dec 28 — over 90% of pool funds drained ➡️Dec 29: another $6M in BTC and USDT stolen from Omni wallet ➡️Dec 31: remaining assets moved to cold wallets ➡️ LuBian sent 1,516 OP_RETURN messages to hacker addresses, asking for funds back ➡️Messages cost 1.4 BTC — strong evidence they came from the real team ➡️ Arkham says the pool used a weak key generation algorithm vulnerable to brute-force attacks ➡️11,886 BTC were saved and remain untouched ➡️ Stolen BTC last moved in July 2024 (wallet consolidation only) The LuBian hacker now ranks among the top 13 BTC holders globally — ahead of the Mt.
