🌍 Water against fire and noise. During rocket launches and fire tests, NASA floods the launch pad with huge amounts of water. This system is called Ignition Overpressure Protection and Sound Suppression (IOP/SS). It: — Reduces the thermal load from the engines; — Dampens the shock wave and reflects acoustic energy; — Prevents dangerous vibrations; — Helps suppress possible fires. Without this 'water shield,' the launch infrastructure literally would not withstand the power of rocket engines.
