🟠 Navigation on Mars without GPS. The Perseverance rover has a new navigation system — Mars Global Localization. It allows the rover to independently determine its position on the surface of Mars without the help of operators on Earth. The algorithm compares panoramic camera images with orbital maps made by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The accuracy is about 25 cm. This means that the rover will be able to move further and faster autonomously — which means more research and new discoveries.
