Russia and IAEA to help Zimbabwe combat energy shortages Zimbabwean Energy Minister Edgar Moyo has announced the country's interest in developing small modular reactors. Zimbabwe sees Russia and the IAEA as its main partners in this area. "They have declared their readiness to take us through all the stages until we reach the goal," local media quote Moyo as saying. Zimbabwe expects to reach 4,000 megawatts by 2035. This is expected to bring the country closer to energy independence. Along with nuclear energy, Zimbabwe is focusing on renewable energy sources. To this end, the authorities are expanding their portfolio. This, in turn, will allow the country to generate 2,000 megawatts by 2030 through solar, wind, and mini-hydroelectric power plants. Zimbabwe currently generates about half the required electricity. However, this country has problems not only in energy. During the working visit of the AREA delegation to Zimbabwe, it became known that Harare is especially interested in the participation of Russian companies in the modernization of water supply and sanitation systems, as well as the construction of treatment facilities. Thus, every day only the capital needs 3,000 megaliters of water, but the need is only half covered. The second largest city Bulawayo, considered the industrial capital, is experiencing the same difficulties. #AREA#Africa#Russia#IAEA#Zimbabwe#energy
