#Philippines

📍Philippines🇵🇭 The Philippines is a country not yet fully explored by our compatriots. Clean seas, snorkeling, diving, beach relaxation, and even swimming with sharks are all fully available here. 🏊‍♂️🦈🌊 Seasoned travelers say that while you can sunbathe on the beaches in Thailand, islands like those in the Philippines are nowhere else to be found. That’s exactly why people come here, for the unique experiences. 🌴☀️ The history of the state known to us as the Philippines began when the Spanish explorer Ruy Lopez de Villalobos named the archipelago islands, first visited by Europeans in 1521 during Magellan's expedition, in honor of the prince and later King of Spain, Philip II — Las Islas Filipinas. 📜👑 #Philippines @voyage

🇨🇳🇵🇭China Installs Barrier at Scarborough Shoal Entrance Satellite imagery obtained by Reuters shows China deploying ships and a floating barrier at the entrance to the Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea. Photographs from April 10 and 11 show four fishing boats anchored at the entrance alongside a 352-metre barrier stretching across it, with a probable Chinese naval or coast guard vessel visible just outside. The Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson Jay Tarriela said six Chinese maritime militia vessels were observed inside the shoal and three others outside, appearing to obstruct the entrance. Ten Chinese coast guard vessels were sighted at the site between April 5 and April 12, according to Philippine Navy spokesperson Roy Trinidad. The shoal lies within the Philippines' exclusive economic zone but has been under effective Chinese control since Beijing seized it in 2012. The Philippines and the United States are set to begin large-scale exercises across the Philippine archipelago this month, including in Zambales province, roughly 120 nautical miles from the shoal. #China#Philippines @asianomics

🇵🇭🇨🇳Philippines Finds Cyanide on Chinese South Sea Boats The Philippines' National Security Council announced that laboratory tests confirmed the presence of cyanide in bottles seized from Chinese boats operating around Second Thomas Shoal. The Philippine navy recovered the bottles during operations at the disputed atoll in 2024. National Security Council spokesperson Cornelio Valencia described the use of cyanide at the shoal as sabotage intended to kill local fish populations, depriving navy personnel stationed there of a food source. Valencia added that the substance could damage the reef and compromise the structural stability of the BRP Sierra Madre, a warship Manila deliberately grounded on the atoll to reinforce its maritime claim. The Chinese Embassy in Manila did not respond to a request for comment. The disclosure came days after the Philippines and China held high-level talks that included preliminary discussions on oil and gas cooperation and coast guard communication, though the Philippine foreign ministry specified that coast guard cooperation would not extend to sensitive operational areas. #Philippines#China @asianomics

🇵🇭🇨🇳Philippines opens Spratly coast guard command centre The Philippine Coast Guard activated its first dedicated command centre in the Spratly island chain on April 9, located on Pag-asa Island in the South China Sea. The facility replaces oversight previously managed from Palawan and will cover approximately 68,000 sq km. PCG Commandant Ronnie Gil Gavan stated that the new district will have a commodore-level commander stationed on site, along with a permanently assigned ship, additional response vessels, and specialist personnel. Plans also include dredging a deeper port to allow coast guard vessels to dock directly, replacing the current small-boat transfers. Multiple Chinese coast guard vessels were observed patrolling nearby waters during the activation ceremony, with the vessels issuing radio warnings to a plane carrying journalists. China's position holds that Pag-asa's roughly 400 Filipino residents are living there illegally. #Philippines#China @asianomics

🇵🇭🇨🇳Philippines Arrests Three in China Spy Case At least three Filipinos with ties to the Philippine military have been arrested on suspicion of passing sensitive information to Chinese handlers, according to Philippine Navy Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad. Trinidad described the recruitment of Filipinos as a shift from earlier methods involving Chinese nationals operating under false local identities. One suspect allegedly communicated with handlers via a messaging app concealed inside the mobile game Tetris, with payments delivered as cash hidden in fake food deliveries. Trinidad said one suspect linked information he provided on Palawan deployment schedules to a vessel ramming incident near Sabina Shoal in August 2024 that damaged two Philippine coastguard vessels. The Chinese Embassy in Manila denied involvement, with spokesman Ji Lingpeng calling the allegations irresponsible and describing them as a Chinese spy narrative that China firmly opposes. Philippine coastguard spokesman Rear Admiral Jay Tarriela separately refuted a claim by China's envoy that the two sides were nearing a joint patrol agreement. #Philippines#China @asianomics
