Kazakhstan is one of the key players in the global wheat market and traditionally ranks among the top 20 exporters worldwide. According to USDA data for the 2024/2025 marketing year, the country ranked 11th in the world in wheat production, with an output of 18.5 million tons, accounting for 2.3% of global production. According to the findingsof the Caspy Commodity Exchange analytical report in the 2024/2025 marketing year, Kazakhstan achieved significant success in grain exports, increasing shipments of grain and flour by 34% and diversifying export destinations. Wheat exports are estimated at 10 million tons, driven by a high wheat harvest in Kazakhstan and other economic factors. This is the second-largest volume ever recorded and significantly higher than the previous year. Government subsidies for grain transportation helped stimulate export growth by facilitating the removal of surplus grain from the domestic market. This also enabled an increase in exports to less traditional markets such as Azerbaijan, Georgia, Morocco, and some EU countries. Despite positive trends, Kazakhstan’s grain market faces fundamental challenges. Key issues include strong competition from cheaper Russian Federation grain, lower yields compared to major competitors, and institutional and legal barriers hindering the development of efficient exchange-based trading.
