The Other Story is a work tool that forces me to look away from the logic of the words, giving the film an extra tension and ambiguity. To make room for the subtext to be read, it is important that we tell the film simply. “Less is more” is decisive for the filmic experience. Far too often, stories and plots are over complicated. Maybe it is exciting when we read the script, which we can do at our own tempo, but in film, time runs quickly, and if you miss something, you can’t go back and read it again. Complicated stories result in the viewer getting mired in the intellectual experience, trying to work through the large amount of information they are receiving. Therefore a viewer of these kinds of films never enters into the emotional experience. The result is that they watch the film from the outside, as if being lectured by a bad teacher, and they never become part of co-creating the emotional experience. A simple fundamental story gives us editors room to work more deeply into the subtext. With this work it’s not about telling everything, but creating curiosity, so the viewer can begin to ask questions. Creating simplicity out of a large amount of material is a big job; it requires countless choices in the distilling process, where one works through to a deeper and deeper understanding of what lies at the core of the story one wants to describe.
