Hello everyone, Wednesday will mark this year’s winter solstice, a travelling of the sun that’s been celebrated by cultures worldwide for generations. From Shab-e Yalda celebrations in Iran, to Dong-Zhi in China, to the ancient Incan ceremony Inti Raymi, this day serves to honour the darkest day of the year in gorgeously different and underlying related ways- they all ceremonially harness light. Just as the rhythms of the natural world cycle through darkness and light, the social and political world around us does the same. And documentary makers remain ready to capture these cycles as they come. Amidst all the darkness this year, we take our hats off to all of you who have looked through keyholes, contorted the camera, and honestly worked your ass off to harness the light. Our gratitude to you. The term ‘solstice’ combines the Latin words sol for “Sun” and sistere for “To Stand Still.” As we all (hopefully) come to a bit of a stand still as the year ends, we hope you welcome well-deserved rest and rejuvenation that is necessary for the year ahead. We’ve been grateful to read the NDN Collective’s musings and suggestions for how indigenous communities can acknowledge the solstice as a decolonial act.
