Aiming to cut a philosophical midpoint, and borrowing from Poincaré’s structuralism, Worrall shifts the focus of no miracles argument from ontological continuity to structural continuity, arguing that we should be committed to the structure that is continuous between successive and successful scientific theories. For example, we should be epistemically committed to the structure of light, but not its nature, as expressed by the shared structure between Fresnel and Maxwell’s equations. This epistemic structural realist position holds that we can explain the success of scientific theories in a non-miraculous manner, and so avoids the force of pessimistic meta-induction argument. That is, the success of science is explained, not by reference to objects, but by reference to our epistemic grasp of the continuity of the structure of successful and successive scientific theories, all the while accepting the possibility of ontological discontinuity between successive theories. Thus, the slogan: all we know is structure.
