What role do they play in the modern world, especially considering the attempts to politicize these international treaties by the "collective West"? 💬Answer from the Russian Permanent Mission in Geneva: 75 years ago, following the outcomes of the Second World War, a universal set of measures was established to protect civilians and prisoners of war during armed conflicts. During the War, the peoples of the Soviet Union were subjected to horrific and unparalleled crimes committed by the Nazis and their accomplices. The Geneva Conventions, adopted in 1949, were developed in part based on this tragic experience. ⛑ Today, the Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols are a key source of international humanitarian law. Ensuring the strict compliance with these international treaties is a common task for the international community. ❗️ Currently, we observe violations of international humanitarian law, as well as attempts by certain countries to use the Geneva Conventions for their political gains. However, this does not reflect a failure of these international legal standards. It rather stems from the inability or unwillingness of certain parties to implement them faithfully in practice. 🇷🇺 It is important to emphasize that Russia is firmly committed to its obligations under international humanitarian law.
