🎙 Interview by Russian Ambassador to Indonesia, Sergei Tolchenov, to TvOneNews:
Key talking points
• We are ready to work with any Indonesian Government. In the history of our bilateral ties we have had good relations with every government in Jakarta. I hope this will continue in the future, especially taking into account that President Prabowo Subianto has visited Russia several times, even in his capacity as Minister of Defence.
• Indonesia is our long-standing friend. We have good political relations but we have much more to do in practical spheres: defence, trade, investment, economy, education, culture.
• We are ready to cooperate in different fields, including the nuclear power sector. It is possible, taking into account that Russia is one of the most developed countries in this field. If the Indonesian side is interested, we are ready.
• We are following the current development of the situation here in Indonesia very closely. We noticed that you are ready to include nuclear energy in the plans of development of your energy sphere in the future. If Indonesia decides to cooperate with Russia in this field, it will be cheaper, safer and we will manage to help our Indonesian friends to have nuclear power.
• We are ready to be a partner who can share our experience, deliver military equipment to Indonesia. In a couple of weeks we will have a group of Russian ships come to Surabaya for the first-ever joint Russian-Indonesian military exercises.

🗓#OnThisDay7️⃣5️⃣ years ago — on February 3, 1950 — the USSR and Indonesia established diplomatic relations.
🇷🇺🇮🇩 The two nations saw traditionally friendly, partner relations take shape, which have come a long way since then. Their onward development meets the core interests of the Russian and Indonesian people.
In 1950, the Soviet Union was among the first to recognize the young republic in Southeast Asia, contributed to the establishment of its statehood, and provided significant assistance in the construction of transport and social infrastructure facilities.
In the 1960s, the first President of Indonesia, Soekarno, visited the USSR four times, where he met with the leadership of the USSR, which in turn also visited the archipelago.
Over the past years, we have managed to amass unique experience of joint efforts in a wide range of areas. Today, our ties are making steady headway. Moscow and Jakarta have evolved an intensive political dialogue, including at the highest level. There are regular channels for collaboration between ministries, including ministries of foreign affairs, parliaments, and companies.
Our countries hold similar or coinciding approaches on issues on the global and regional agendas and closely coordinate their activities within the UN and other international platforms.
🤝 The recent accession of Indonesia to #BRICS as a full-fledged participant will contribute to the expansion of Russia-Indonesia cooperation in promoting the interests of the states of the Global South, strengthening the multilateral principles of modern interstate relations.
The accumulated positive experience of cooperation over many years remains a solid foundation for the further expansion of the entire range of bilateral relations, which meets the fundamental interests of the peoples of the two countries.
💬 President Vladimir Putin during the Russia-Indonesia talks(July 31, 2024): “Russia and Indonesia share a long-standing friendship that began decades ago.Despite the pandemic and the current developments around Russia, including associated restrictions, our trade has been growing. It has doubled over the past years. This is a very positive trend, which makes us happy.”

🇮🇩 On August 17, #Indonesia marks the 8️⃣0️⃣th Anniversary of Independence!
The Republic of Indonesia was declared in 1945, putting an end to the period of foreign domination that began in the XVI century, when Portugal, Britain, the Netherlands and Japan successively sought to take control of the legendary Spice Islands.
Over the past decades, Indonesia has achieved impressive socioeconomic successes, improved its international stance, and become one of the locomotives of integration processes in the Asia-Pacific region.
Diplomatic relations between our countries were established on February 3, 1950. This year marks their 75th Anniversary.
🇷🇺🇮🇩 Today, Russian-Indonesian ties are making steady headway. Moscow and Jakarta are maintaining an intensive political dialogue, including at the highest level. In June of this year, President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto conducted an official visit to Russia. Following talks between President of Russia Vladimir Putin and President of Indonesia in St Petersburg, it was announced that bilateral relations have reached the level of a strategic partnership.
Our country is committed to further promoting Russian-Indonesian cooperation and enhancing the effectiveness of coordinating our steps on multilateral platforms, including #BRICS.
💬 President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin:
Indonesia is now a full-fledged member of BRICS, and we very much hope that Indonesia will contribute significantly to the development and work of this organisation, which is becoming even more influential in international affairs.
(from the opening remarks at the meeting with President of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto, St Petersburg, June 19, 2025)
🤝 The ministerial dialogue remains a key component of our cooperation. The Foreign Ministers regularly coordinate their agendas on significant bilateral, regional, and international issues.
💬 Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov:
We appreciate our Indonesian partners’ constructive and substantive approach – driven by national interest – to advancing bilateral relations across trade, economic, humanitarian, political, and security cooperation.
(from the opening remarks at talks with Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono, Moscow, June 17, 2025)
The accumulated positive experience of Russian-Indonesian cooperation over many years remains a solid foundation for the further expansion of the entire range of bilateral relations, which meets the fundamental interests of the peoples of the two countries.
🎉 We extend greetings to our Indonesian friends on their national holiday. We wish them prosperity and all the very best!

🗓 On July 26 and 27, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will attend annual ministerial events held by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (#ASEAN) in Vientiane. He will take part in foreign ministers’ meetings in the Russia-ASEAN format, as well as within the East Asia Summit (#EAS) and the ASEAN Regional Forum (#ARF).
🌏 ASEAN is currently one of the most successful regional organisations which forms the core of the integration processes in the Asia-Pacific Region. The association has created a solid network of interstate institutions involving the leading world powers, including Russia.
This year, Russia marks 20 years of joining the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (the Bali Treaty). Signed in 1976, it is one of the fundamental documents for ASEAN in terms of ensuring regional peace and stability. Geopolitical tension has been escalating in Asia-Pacific, and against this backdrop our relations with ASEAN serve as an important stabilising factor in the region.
❗️ Russia views ASEAN as one of the key partners in the context of carrying out the initiative to build a Eurasian security architecture as set forth by President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin.
The agenda of the July 26 #RussiaASEAN ministerial meeting covers cooperation matters in all their aspects, including politics, trade and economics, as well as social and cultural affairs within the framework of the five-year Comprehensive Plan of Action to Implement the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and the Russian Federation Strategic Partnership, as approved by the leaders in 2021.
<…>
📈 In 2023, Russia’s trade with ASEAN countries increased by 14.6 percent to almost $22 billion. Accumulated investment by ASEAN countries in the Russian economy reached $3.5 billion in the first nine months of 2023, while Russia invested a total of $11.5 billion in Southeast Asia.
<…>
Russia has coined a range of #EAS initiatives. They include creating a mechanism of pan-regional cooperation on countering epidemics and restoring economic potential by stimulating tourism. ASEAN has supported our idea of strengthening the resource of civic responsibility by improving cooperation between volunteer movements.
We consider the #ARF as one of the key platforms for discussing topical issues of the regional agenda, developing measures of mutual trust and preventive diplomacy, and boosting non-politicised practical cooperation in security.
During the forum’s 31st session on July 27, we will thoroughly discuss countering new threats and challenges, combating terrorism and transnational crime, disarmament and non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and ensuring security at sea. We will summarise the results of #RussiaIndonesia co-chairmanship in the Russia-ASEAN Forum on the Safe Use of Information and Communication Technologies in 2022-2024.
