✨️ On November 11–12, Islamabad hosted the Inter-Parliamentary Speakers' Conference (ISC), which was attended by representatives of both houses of the Russian parliament – Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council Konstantin Kosachev and Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Alexander Babakov. Excerpts from Konstantin Kosachev's speech at the ISC plenary session: 🔸️Global development is hindered by several states and their alliances imposing sanctions on nearly half the world, as well as by countries and their military alliances unaccountably using force against sovereign states; 🔸️The triumph of dictatorships labeling themselves as democracies cannot be considered a democratic system; 🔸️The focus of global development is shifting from the West to the East and South, yet modern global governance mechanisms remain rooted in the 19th and 20th centuries. Consequently, there is a growing demand for democratic, multilateral formats for interaction, such as the BRICS and G20; 🔸️The root cause of most contemporary conflicts is the remnants of a unipolar world, manifested by contradictions such as those between peoples' right to self-determination and countries' territorial integrity, and between the principle of indivisible security and nations' right to choose military alliances; 🔸️The role of parliamentary diplomacy in ensuring the sovereign equality of states and in resolving inter-ethnic and inter-religious conflicts is growing.
