Wonder #5: The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus ⚱️ This wasn’t just a tomb — it was a masterpiece. In fact, it was so iconic, it gave us the word “mausoleum” we still use today! Built in the 4th century BC in honor of Mausolus, ruler of Caria, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus was a grand tribute by his wife (and sister) Artemisia — yep, that was acceptable back then — to keep his memory alive forever. Some cool facts: Where: Halicarnassus (now Bodrum, Turkey) Height: Around 45 meters Architects: Pythius and Satyros Sculptors: Scopas, Leochares, Bryaxis, and Timotheus — basically the rockstars of ancient art Design: A three-level structure — base, colonnade, pyramid — topped with a chariot statue of Mausolus himself This wonder stood for nearly 1,800 years (!) before earthquakes in the Middle Ages took it down. Later, Crusaders reused its stones to build the Castle of St. Peter. A wonder lost in stone — but never forgotten.
