Devices seized near U.N. meeting could have shut down cellphone networks
The U.S. Secret Service said it uncovered a large network of electronic devices capable of disrupting cellphone networks in New York ahead of the 80th anniversary meeting of the United Nations General Assembly. The agency tasked with protecting the president and vice president did not share evidence of a specific plot or threat against world leaders during the annual gathering.
However, U.S. Secret Service Director Sean Curran said that the "potential" for damage was significant, ranging from disabling regional cellphone towers to facilitating communications between criminals and foreign adversaries. The network could also likely be used for espionage.

Live updates on Epstein files: Trump named in latest documents
The Justice Department released another batch of Jeffrey Epstein documents on Dec. 23, including a report on Epstein’s death and an email alleging President Donald Trump flew on Epstein’s jet more often than previously reported. The DOJ said the claims about Trump are false and unsubstantiated, noting he has not been accused of wrongdoing. The documents, released under a new transparency law, include many redactions to protect victims and ongoing legal concerns, with more files to be released as reviews continue.

Did the Trump admin take down over a dozen Epstein files? Here's what to know.
The U.S. Justice Department removed more than a dozen photos from the recently released Jeffrey Epstein files after concerns raised by victim advocacy groups, according to Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche. He said the images, which included photos of women and one showing President Donald Trump among other materials, were taken down temporarily to review whether additional redactions are needed and will be reposted later. Blanche denied any political motive or cover-up, saying the removals comply with the Epstein Transparency Act, which allows withholding material to protect victims but not for embarrassment or political sensitivity. The partial release, missing key investigative documents and marked by inconsistent redactions, has drawn criticism from Democrats and fueled transparency concerns, though the DOJ says more files will be released after further review.

Epstein accuser Maria Farmer’s 1996 FBI complaint revealed in newly released files
Newly released U.S. Justice Department documents show that Maria Farmer reported Jeffrey Epstein’s misconduct and possible child-pornography activity to the FBI in 1996 — including allegations that Epstein stole and sold nude images of her underage sisters — but authorities failed to act, validating her long-held claim while underscoring decades of inaction that allowed further abuse.

US seizes vessel off Venezuelan coast, sources say
The United States has seized another oil tanker near Venezuela, identified as the Panama-flagged Centuries, shortly after President Donald Trump announced a blockade targeting sanctioned oil tankers entering or leaving the country. The vessel was not itself under U.S. sanctions and was intercepted near Curaçao, according to sources cited by USA TODAY and Reuters. The U.S. Coast Guard reportedly led the operation amid a growing U.S. military presence in the region. Following recent tanker seizures, an effective embargo has emerged, with oil shipments remaining in Venezuelan waters to avoid capture, leading to a sharp drop in Venezuela’s crude exports.

Who is in the Epstein files? A look at the latest names.
Newly released photos and emails tied to Jeffrey Epstein continue to surface, revealing additional names of people who had social or professional connections with him. These names come from materials released by both Democrats and Republicans on the House Oversight Committee, as well as documents shared with USA TODAY by Distributed Denial of Secrets. Importantly, appearing in these records does not imply wrongdoing; in many cases, it simply reflects contact or association without context or allegations.

Kennedy Center renamed the 'Trump-Kennedy Center,' White House says
The White House says the Kennedy Center’s board, now chaired by President Donald Trump, voted unanimously to rename the venue the “Trump-Kennedy Center,” citing Trump’s role in its reconstruction, finances and reputation, though an official name change would require congressional approval under a 1964 law. Trump reshaped the board after returning to office, installed allies in leadership roles, and has pledged to overhaul programming and management. The federally owned arts center, which receives about 16% of its budget from government funding, remains a major national cultural venue amid controversy over the renaming and Trump’s broader plans for its future.
