With each passing international hockey tournament that has taken place without the Russian delegation since Russia invaded Ukraine for a second time (the first was in 2014) in 2022, the talk of the Russian team being missed is less and less. The mention of Russia and, to a much lesser extent, Belarus has all but disappeared to where they no longer matter. In fact, many, but not all, officials I spoke to told me that the atmosphere at the games was far better than the days when the «arrogant» Russians showed up. What I do believe to be true is that there are many European countries that have experienced being invaded by Russia and/or the Soviet Union. These memories are very fresh, and they support Ukraine’s sovereignty and oppose Russia’s aggression and their return to playing international hockey. No one can predict the future, but if I were to take a wild guess right now, we will not be seeing Russia playing in international tournaments for many years, if not for a decade or more. If they were to return, the European countries would have to be satisfied that reparations were made for all of the damage that has been caused, especially to Ukraine’s hockey infrastructure, some of which I have seen first-hand.
