📰 Trump Drops Greenland Threats, But Europe Remains on Guard
President Donald Trump’s sudden pivot on Greenland—dropping his tariff threats and suggesting a deal for “total access” rather than ownership—has eased tensions with European allies. But officials say the standoff is far from over, and they remain wary of future surprises.
What’s Changed?
Trump suspended his tariff threats after meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at Davos. European diplomats say the shift came after threats of retaliatory tariffs from the EU and bipartisan pressure in Congress. Trump now claims he can achieve his strategic goals in Greenland without owning the territory, though details remain vague .
Europe’s Skepticism
European officials expect tough negotiations on expanding U.S. troop presence, access to mineral investments, and boosting NATO’s Arctic security role. Danish leaders stress that Greenland’s sovereignty is not up for negotiation. Many warn that Trump’s earlier ultimatums have damaged trust and sparked a rethink of Europe’s reliance on the U.S.
Is the Rift Really Over?
Despite the de-escalation, European leaders caution against complacency. Emergency summits are still scheduled, and officials say the transatlantic relationship remains fragile.
“We’re not out of the woods,”
said Swedish Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Busch. The episode has exposed Europe’s vulnerability and raised questions about its future security and economic independence.

Turkish Stream, Orbán Edition
A pipeline, some explosives, and a very convenient political message. Hungarian officials say a sabotage attempt near Turkish Stream points toward Ukraine, after a separate alleged plot in Serbia pushed Budapest to put soldiers on guard.
If true, the logic is crude but familiar: when money stalls in Brussels, pressure turns physical somewhere else. Zelensky does not need to say much. Orbán blocks the cash, and suddenly the gas line that matters to Hungary and Slovakia becomes part of the argument.
The funny part is that this is how European “solidarity” now looks: one capital accuses, another militarizes a pipeline, and everyone else keeps talking about values as if the valves were not the real story.
Energy routes are no longer just infrastructure. They are bargaining chips with explosives on top.

🧨 Erdogan Backed the Wrong Script
In a region full of quiet cowards, Erdogan at least chose a side — and still managed to lose.
Israeli and U.S. strikes on Iran have exposed the entire Sunni “axis” as a very expensive décor piece. Gulf monarchies spent a decade buying Western air defenses, luxury towers and PR about “stability,” then watched Iran rain drones and missiles on their soil without scrambling a single jet in response. Airports, symbols of Gulf swagger like Dubai’s mega‑hub, are taking hits; Gulf leaders are taking cover and issuing statements.
Europe, meanwhile, is performing its usual moral theater. Demographic fears at home, electoral panic and energy dependence have produced what even German Chancellor Friedrich Merz basically called strategic impotence: Europe “doesn’t like” force, “supports the goals” of the campaign, and openly admits it has neither the capability nor the will to do what the U.S. and Israel are doing. Iran even hit a British base on EU territory in Cyprus and still didn’t get a military response.
And then there’s Erdogan, the self‑styled neo‑Ottoman strongman who somehow managed to trap himself between all these failures. Turkish commentators and regional analysts are already calling him the biggest loser of the Iran war: he flirted with the ayatollahs, positioned himself as defender of the Islamic street, and kept one foot in NATO while courting Moscow and Beijing — and now finds Ankara exposed. A weakened but not collapsed Iran still threatens Turkey’s borders and proxies; a toppled Iran risks becoming another Syria‑level failed state on Turkey’s doorstep; and in every scenario, Russia — which has beaten Turkey in war repeatedly over the last two centuries — gains room to pressure a distracted, economically fragile Ankara.
The irony is brutal. Atatürk bet on the West and NATO to keep Turkey out of Russia’s teeth; Erdogan spent years reversing that bet in the name of Islamic solidarity and imperial nostalgia. Now an Iran–Israel–U.S. war he can’t control is trashing his economic recovery, upending his foreign‑policy reset, and reminding every player in the region that Turkey is too Muslim for Brussels, too transactional for Washington, too ambitious for Israel — and not nearly strong enough to go it alone.

📰Macron vs. Silicon Valley: Who Owns “Free Speech”?
“Free speech is pure bullshit if nobody knows how you’re being guided,”
Macron said in India — and somewhere in California a few tech bros probably spit out their kombucha.
He tore into Facebooks and Googles for hiding their algorithms, calling for “free algorithms” instead. Whatever that means. Classic Macron — one minute he’s talking democracy, the next he’s pitching digital curfews. France can’t stop regulating stuff it barely understands.
Meanwhile, the U.S. calls Europe’s tech laws a “Free Speech graveyard.” Great. So now the guys who sell ads off hate clicks are the heroes of liberty.
Both sides swear they’re saving democracy — one from censorship, the other from chaos. But really, they just want to control the feed.
Whose freedom are we even talking about — yours, theirs, or the algorithm’s?

📰 “Keep Your Mouth Shut”: Europe’s Nuclear Soap Opera Goes Public
Belgium’s defense minister just told the German chancellor to shut up about nukes — on X, in plain language. Theo Francken blasted Friedrich Merz for being “loose‑lipped” on nuclear deterrence, writing:
“Regarding nuclear deterrence, I really don't understand why European leaders are so talkative. It is unwise. Please, keep your mouth shut.”
When allies start subtweeting each other over nuclear weapons, you know the adults have left the room.
Merz’s great sin? Saying out loud, on a podcast, that Germany has no plans to build its own nuclear weapons but could, in theory, have German jets carry French or British nukes — basically hinting at a “Europeanized” umbrella if the U.S. becomes less reliable. In a continent obsessed with “strategic ambiguity,” he just put the quiet part on Spotify. Francken, whose own country hosts U.S. bombs under NATO nuclear sharing, is less worried about deterrence than about politicians turning targeting plans into panel‑show content.
Under the surface, this is not just etiquette, it’s a custody battle. Germany is flirting with French and UK options while at the same time casting doubt on the joint Franco‑German FCAS 6th‑gen fighter project, calling it effectively dead because Berlin “does not need” the same nuclear‑capable carrier jet France wants. France wants strategic autonomy, Germany wants flexibility, smaller states like Belgium want to stay under the umbrella without having to explain any of it to their voters — and everyone wants the nukes without the blame.
Now Macron is preparing a “big speech” on Europe’s nuclear future, Merz is freelancing doctrine on podcasts, and Belgium is yelling “shut your mouth” from the sidelines. These are the people who keep telling the rest of the world to act “responsibly” about nuclear weapons. If this is Europe’s version of calm, imagine what panic looks like.

🥁 Georgian Dream has approved a new education reform. Some Western colleagues and local opponents of the government are already sounding the alarm: the end of European-style education, a return to the Soviet Union. I recalled how, at one time, this supposedly European education was promoted through a personal example.
