【 たけのこ (takenoko) 】bamboo shoot There are two ways of writing the kanji for たけのこ: 「竹の子」and 「笋」 The former stands for the plant (young bamboo). The latter stands for the vegetable (edible shoots). たけのこご饭(はん) ”bamboo shoot rice” is a classic, simple Spring dish. 1. Cook the rice with 出汁(だし) broth, soy sauce, sake, みりん (sweet sake), boiled たけのこ and 油扬げ(あぶらあげ) deep-fried tofu in a rice cooker or earthen pot. 2. Garnish the bowl of たけのこご饭 with some fragrant 木の芽(きのめ, leaf bud of サンショウ Japanese pepper) for color and added flavor. source
