Messaging apps in general spent the most time at the top across all the App Store territories, accounting for seven of the top 10 in the ranking. Chief among them was the now Facebook-owned #WhatsApp, which was one of four apps in the top five under the social giant’s auspices, the other three being Messenger, #Instagram, and the core #Facebook app itself.

WhatsApp is now Facebook’s second-biggest property, followed by Facebook Messenger & Instagram!
#Facebook & #WhatsApp boasted record usership — 2.13 billion & 1.5 billion MAUs (monthly active users), respectively — according to Facebook’s Q4 earnings. That’s despite a small decline in the number of users in 🇺🇸 & 🇨🇦
WhatsApp is now bigger than #FacebookMessenger, its rival/sibling messaging app. It’s also far bigger than #Instagram. Facebook’s namesake app, of course, remains, on top.

#FacebookMessenger was the second most installed non-game app worldwide last month with more than 60.7 million downloads. #Facebook, #TikTok, and #Snapchat made up the rest of the top five most installed non-game apps last month.

📊TikTok is Making a Splash with the Youth
#Instagram use among younger Americans has been increasing over the past few years, with nearly 7 in 10 (68%) Americans between the ages of 12 and 34 now reporting that they use the popular app. But, while Instagram leads in usage with this age group, the most recent Infinite Dial Report released by Edison Research and Triton Digital reveals that #TikTok is also making a splash with youth.
New to the report this year, TikTok has done well in brand awareness, with nearly two-thirds (64%) of the more than 1,500 Americans (ages 12+) surveyed saying they are aware of the social media app. That said, only 11% are using the platform. And, although this pales in comparison to the usage of more established social media platforms like #Facebook (63%), Instagram (41%) and #Snapchat (31%), TikTok adoption has grown quickly since its release in the US in late 2017.
