#COP30 What is happening at COP30 in Brazil? At COP30 in Belém, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) presented its Global Cooling Watch 2025 report and launched the Mutirão initiative — meaning “collective effort” — to combat extreme heat. This became one of the key highlights of the conference. 🌍 More than 150 cities — from Rio de Janeiro to Nairobi — have already joined the effort to tackle extreme heatwaves and develop sustainable cooling systems. The initiative is led by the COP30 Presidency in partnership with the Cool Coalition. 📈 According to UNEP, extreme heat already causes half a million deaths every year. And if no action is taken, the number of people at risk in cities could increase sevenfold by 2050. 💬 Inger Andersen, Executive Director of UNEP, emphasizes: “Access to cooling must be considered basic infrastructure — just like water, energy, and sanitation. But we cannot simply ‘air-condition’ the planet.” 🌱 There are solutions: — climate-responsive architecture, — green infrastructure, — energy-efficient and resilient technologies. These measures can reduce emissions from the cooling sector by up to 64% and save trillions of dollars. 🇧🇷 Brazil is already experiencing record-breaking heat, noted Adalberto Maluf, Deputy Minister for Environment and Climate Change. Mutirão helps cities understand what steps are needed and how to secure financing for real change. 🤝 The initiative already unites more than 80 partners and aims to reach 200 cities, including 80 in Brazil. 🎯 The main goal is to make heat adaptation a global policy priority and ensure everyone’s right to live in a healthy and safe environment.
