🗓 86 years ago — on August 23, 1939 — the Soviet Union and Germany signed the Non-Aggression Treaty in Moscow. This document was an important achievement of the Soviet diplomacy ahead of #WWII: the USSR was able to buy time to better prepare to repel Hitler’s impending attack, which had been seen as inevitable due to the failed policy of “appeasement” by Western European states and their refusal to forge a collective security agreement with our nation against Nazism. Signing the non-aggression treaty with Germany was a difficult but necessary decision by the Soviet leadership, driven by national security considerations and the urgent need to deter Nazi aggression in the east. *** In the 1930s, twenty years after the end of World War I, the threat of a new large-scale armed conflict in Europe began to grow. A key factor for this was the crisis of the Versailles system of international relations, designed by Britain and France, which paved the way for rising revanchist sentiments in the states it had humiliated — Germany and Italy. With the Nazis’ rise to power in Germany, the threat of a new war in Europe became real. Hitler’s misanthropic ideology was rooted in the notorious doctrine of “racial superiority.” The Nazis used this doctrine to justify Germany’s pursuit of world domination. In this way, an absolute evil emerged at the heart of Europe, endangering the peace and freedom of entire nations. By the mid-1930s, it became evident that another German aggression in Europe was inevitable — it was merely a matter of time. In an effort to counter the rising threat of German revanchism, the Soviet Union suggested the creation of a collective security system in Europe, founded on anti-fascist principles, to unite efforts and deliver a joint response to the common threat. Yet in Paris and London, where anti-Soviet sentiments ran deep, the idea of cooperation with Moscow was rejected as such. Instead, Western powers sought to strike a deal with Germany, aiming to pacify the Germans through unilateral concessions. The political establishments of the West failed to grasp the existential threat posed by Nazi ideology, cynically believing that Hitler’s aggression could be redirected eastward. The “appeasement” tactics whetted the aggressor’s appetite. In March 1938, with the connivance of Paris and London, Hitler carried out the Anschluss of Austria. In September, following the criminal “Munich conspiracy” and with the approval of the UK and France, he cynically dismembered the sovereign state of Czechoslovakia. Warsaw, which was interested in getting part of Czechoslovakia’s territory for itself, prohibited flights of Soviet aircraft to render aid to Czechoslovak army. Already a de facto accomplice of Hitler, Poland had supported every single foreign policy move of the Reich. ❗️A new war in Europe became inevitable. Thus, “appeasement” policy ended in total failure. Attempting to sate the Nazis’ insatiable ambitions, the Western powers failed to restrain the aggressor or thwart its criminal plans. The Soviet Union remained the only European power still striving to organise collective resistance against Nazi Germany. In the spring and summer of 1939, the USSR initiated consultations with France and Britain in Moscow. However, the negotiation process failed to yield practical results — the Western powers that until the last moment hoped for a compromise with Hitler, engaged in secret talks with Germany behind the Soviet Union’s back. 👉The Soviet diplomacy ran out of chances to build a collective security system in Europe. Moscow also had to take into account the Japanese factor — the hostilities on the Khalkhin-Gol that began in May 1939. The Soviet leadership could not afford a war on two fronts. By August 1939, several European nations had concluded non-aggression pacts with Hitler. The Soviet Union was the last major power to follow the suit. As a result, our country gained valuable time to prepare for a clash with the world’s most powerful army at that time. 📖Learn more in our in-depthhistorical feature.

🇰🇷S. Korea to Recover 90% of Naphtha Supply in May South Korea expects to secure up to 90% of pre-Iran war naphtha volumes for May, with major petrochemical firms lifting plant utilisation rates. Yeochun NCC, which had declared force majeure on some products, raised operations to 65% from 55% on April 1; Korea Petrochemical Ind. moved from 62% to 72% over the same period. Seoul has committed ₩674.4bn ($457mn) to subsidise up to 50% of the price gap between pre-war and current naphtha import costs for April–June. It has also locked in 2.1mn tonnes of alternative naphtha from four Middle Eastern suppliers — including Oman and Saudi Arabia — equivalent to roughly one month of national demand. A parallel crude oil swap system, drawing on state strategic reserves, has processed deals for ~14mn barrels with a further 16.5mn barrels targeted for May. The swap mechanism, initially set to run through end-May, is under review for extension given the prolonged Middle East conflict and high private-sector uptake. #SouthKorea#MiddleEast @asianomics

Earlier, Brent briefly touched $119.50 and WTI $119.48. ⛽️ Supply cuts – Iraq and Kuwait have reduced production, while Qatar’s LNG output has also fallen, tightening energy markets further. 👤 Geopolitical impact – The appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei as Iran’s new supreme leader reinforced expectations of continued hardline policies, adding to market uncertainty. #MiddleEast#News

🚨 Iran Names Mojtaba Khamenei as New Supreme Leader 🇮🇷 Mojtaba Khamenei has been appointed Iran’s new supreme leader, succeeding his father Ali Khamenei, who was killed earlier during the ongoing conflict. The decision was announced by Iran’s Assembly of Experts, which said it selected him by a decisive vote. 👤 Mojtaba Khamenei, a mid-ranking cleric with strong ties to Iran’s security establishment, had long been seen as a leading successor. As supreme leader, he now holds ultimate authority over Iran’s political, military and religious institutions. ⚠️ The appointment comes as the war involving Iran, the United States and Israel enters its second week. Tensions remain high, with Israeli strikes hitting oil storage facilities in Tehran, while Iran reports more than 1,300 civilians killed in the campaign. 🌍 Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the military campaign against Iran’s leadership would continue, while U.S. officials confirmed additional American casualties from earlier Iranian attacks. ✈️ The escalating conflict is also pushing up global energy prices and disrupting international travel, adding to wider geopolitical tensions in the region. #MiddleEast#News

🚨 Indonesia Threatens to Quit Trump’s "Board of Peace" ⚖️ Indonesia’s Defence Minister Prabowo Subianto warned he may withdraw from Donald Trump’s “Board of Peace” if the initiative fails to benefit Palestinians, according to a government statement. 🌍 The board oversees an international stabilisation force in Gaza, part of a ceasefire arrangement that ended the two-year Israel-Hamas war. Indonesia had agreed to contribute troops, but domestic Islamic groups have criticised the move. 🔥 The ongoing conflict involving Iran has further complicated deployment plans, with U.S. officials saying timelines for the stabilisation force may shift due to regional instability. 📌 Domestic pressure is growing, with organisations like the Indonesian Ulema Council urging Jakarta to leave the initiative, while Nahdlatul Ulama suggests using the board to push for broader Middle East peace. 🇮🇩 Prabowo stressed that Indonesia’s participation depends on serving Palestinian and national interests, signalling the country could step back if the initiative no longer aligns with these priorities. #MiddleEast#News

🌏 Central Asia in 2026: Safe Haven or Illusion? Geopolitical Risk Insights 📊 London-based analyst Alexander Smotrov, former Director of Global Counsel, shared with Kursiv Uzbekistan his perspective on geopolitical risk and investment opportunities in Central Asia and the Gulf amid 2026’s global volatility. ⚠️ Geopolitical volatility is now the baseline. Investors face synchronized crises, fragmented sanctions, and rising political risks. Smotrov warns that diversification is less effective, requiring highly selective assessments of markets and sectors. No “safe havens” exist, though areas of relative stability remain. 🛢 Middle East tensions—especially around Iran—could trigger capital reallocation similar to the Ukraine war. While the Gulf has long been viewed as relatively stable, recent escalations have pressured monarchies to engage in active diplomacy to maintain their reputations as investment hubs. 🌐 Central Asia as a “neutral zone.” Smotrov notes that countries like Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan have skillfully balanced relations with China, Russia, the Gulf, Turkey, and the West. This equidistance presents opportunities, but neutrality could be tested if global polarization increases. 👉 Read about this and more in the full article #MiddleEast#News
