🇵🇭Philippine Inflation Hits 3-Year High Philippine annual inflation surged to 7.2% in April — the highest since March 2023 — as fuel prices spiked on the back of Middle East conflict, pushing costs across food, transport, and utilities. The figure exceeded the 5.5% economist consensus and broke through the central bank's own forecast ceiling of 6.4%. The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas now faces pressure to act outside its regular meeting cycle. The April print signals that supply-side interventions are insufficient in the current external environment, raising the probability of an emergency rate hike to re-anchor expectations. An off-cycle tightening move would mark a significant policy shift, complicating growth prospects as the Philippines absorbs both global commodity shocks and domestic demand pressures. #Philippines @asianomics

🇯🇵🇮🇩🇵🇭Japan pushes lethal arms deals in Southeast Asia Japan's Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi signed a defence cooperation pact in Jakarta with Indonesian counterpart Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin on Monday, before proceeding to Manila where Japanese forces are participating in the annual Balikatan exercise alongside US troops. Frigate and submarine sales are reportedly under discussion with both countries. The visits follow Tokyo's decision last month to lift its post-WWII ban on lethal weapons exports, now permitting arms transfers to 17 designated defence partners — a structural break from Japan's pacifist doctrine. The regional tour signals a deliberate effort to harden Indonesian and Philippine maritime postures against Chinese pressure in the South China Sea and surrounding waters. The sequencing — Jakarta pact, then Manila trilateral drills — positions Japan as an active security provider in Southeast Asia, not merely a diplomatic observer. #Japan#Indonesia#Philippines @asianomics

🇵🇭Mayon Volcano Pyroclastic Flow Triggers Mass Evacuation Mayon volcano in Albay province triggered a mass evacuation of over 300 families after lava deposits on its southwestern slope collapsed into a pyroclastic flow on Saturday, blanketing 87 villages across three towns in dense ashfall. No explosive eruption occurred — the event stemmed from cascading hot rocks, ash, and gas. No deaths or injuries were reported. Mayon has been in a state of mild, intermittent eruption since January. Philippine volcanology agency Phivolcs recorded 32 volcanic earthquakes over the weekend, including 25 tremors. Visibility dropped to zero on national roads, livestock were killed, and vegetable farms sustained damage across the affected towns. Phivolcs confirmed the volcano had stabilized by Monday but maintained that underlying hazard conditions persist. #Philippines @asianomics

🇵🇭Mayon Volcano Erupts, Thousands Evacuated Mayon Volcano in Albay province, south of Manila, erupted on May 2–3, prompting mass evacuations across surrounding communities. The Philippine volcanology institute raised Alert Level 3 out of five, reporting strombolian activity, lava fountaining, and risks of landslides and lava flows. A 6km radius danger zone has been enforced. Nearly 1,500 families are sheltering in evacuation centres, according to the Department of Social Welfare and Development. Heavy ashfall blanketed multiple towns on May 2, disrupting traffic across the province. Mayon is one of the Philippines' most active volcanoes, with a documented history of recurring eruptive cycles. Displacement is expected to expand if activity escalates beyond Alert Level 3. #Philippines @asianomics

🇯🇵🇵🇭Marcos to visit Tokyo as state guest in May Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will visit Japan as a state guest for four days from May 26, following Cabinet approval. The itinerary includes bilateral talks with PM Sanae Takaichi, an audience with Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, and a banquet at the Imperial Palace. The visit coincides with the 70th anniversary of normalized Japan-Philippines ties. Talks are expected to cover the Free and Open Indo-Pacific framework and strategic alignment, with diplomatic sources citing shared concerns over an increasingly assertive China. Both governments describe the relationship as a strategic partnership built on common values and interests. Marcos will be Japan's first state guest since Brazilian President Lula da Silva in March 2025, signaling the diplomatic weight Tokyo assigns to Manila in its Indo-Pacific posture. #Japan#Philippines @asianomics

🇨🇳🇵🇭China Installs Barrier at Scarborough Shoal Entrance Satellite imagery obtained by Reuters shows China deploying ships and a floating barrier at the entrance to the Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea. Photographs from April 10 and 11 show four fishing boats anchored at the entrance alongside a 352-metre barrier stretching across it, with a probable Chinese naval or coast guard vessel visible just outside. The Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson Jay Tarriela said six Chinese maritime militia vessels were observed inside the shoal and three others outside, appearing to obstruct the entrance. Ten Chinese coast guard vessels were sighted at the site between April 5 and April 12, according to Philippine Navy spokesperson Roy Trinidad. The shoal lies within the Philippines' exclusive economic zone but has been under effective Chinese control since Beijing seized it in 2012. The Philippines and the United States are set to begin large-scale exercises across the Philippine archipelago this month, including in Zambales province, roughly 120 nautical miles from the shoal. #China#Philippines @asianomics

🇵🇭🇺🇸Philippines Seeks US Waiver for Russian Oil The Philippines has formally requested US permission to extend a sanctions waiver allowing purchases of Russian crude, after crude import disruptions cut at least four million barrels in shipments to its sole refinery since the start of the US-Israeli war on Iran. Philippine Energy Secretary Sharon Garin said the request had been officially relayed to Washington through the Department of Foreign Affairs. In March, the US eased certain sanctions tied to Russia's war on Ukraine to permit purchases of Russian oil already at sea until April 11, following the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz. About 30 per cent of the Philippines' crude imports depend on supplies transiting that waterway, and local pump prices for diesel have since doubled. Garin said the Philippines holds approximately 50 days' worth of petroleum supply. If the US waiver extension is not granted, Manila would consider alternative sources including Colombia, the United States, Canada, Brunei, and India. #Philippines#USA @asianomics

🇵🇭🇺🇸US-Philippines Balikatan Drills Expand Multinational Scope The annual Balikatan exercises will run from April 20 to May 8 across the Philippine archipelago, with more than 17,000 troops from the US, Philippines, and partner nations participating. Colonel Robert Bunn, US spokesperson for the exercises, described the drills as a demonstration of the alliance commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific. Japan's Self-Defense Force will conduct live-fire drills for the first time this year, deploying its Type 88 surface-to-ship missile in a maritime strike exercise to sink a decommissioned vessel. Japan and the Philippines signed a reciprocal access agreement in 2024 permitting each country to deploy military forces on the other's territory. The exercises also incorporate naval vessels, aircraft, and troops from Canada, France, New Zealand, and Australia. Colonel Dennis Hernandez, Philippine spokesperson for the drills, stated the exercises were not directed at any specific country and affirmed the Philippines' right to strengthen its defence capabilities. #Philippines#USA#Japan @asianomics

🇵🇭🇨🇳Philippines Finds Cyanide on Chinese South Sea Boats The Philippines' National Security Council announced that laboratory tests confirmed the presence of cyanide in bottles seized from Chinese boats operating around Second Thomas Shoal. The Philippine navy recovered the bottles during operations at the disputed atoll in 2024. National Security Council spokesperson Cornelio Valencia described the use of cyanide at the shoal as sabotage intended to kill local fish populations, depriving navy personnel stationed there of a food source. Valencia added that the substance could damage the reef and compromise the structural stability of the BRP Sierra Madre, a warship Manila deliberately grounded on the atoll to reinforce its maritime claim. The Chinese Embassy in Manila did not respond to a request for comment. The disclosure came days after the Philippines and China held high-level talks that included preliminary discussions on oil and gas cooperation and coast guard communication, though the Philippine foreign ministry specified that coast guard cooperation would not extend to sensitive operational areas. #Philippines#China @asianomics

🇵🇭🇹🇭Iran War Squeezes Southeast Asia's Rice Farmers The near-closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which remains largely blocked despite a temporary ceasefire, has choked fertiliser and fuel deliveries to South-east Asia. Tens of millions of smallholders across the region are struggling to afford diesel for tractors and irrigation pumps, as well as crop nutrients whose costs have doubled or tripled. In Thailand, some farmers have left harvest-ready crops in the ground because collection costs are prohibitive. In the Philippines, the world's top rice importer, the Federation of Free Farmers Cooperatives projects paddy-rice output could fall by at least 10 per cent in 2026, equivalent to roughly 2 million tons. In Cambodia, around a tenth of the approximately 2,000 farmers working with integrated rice firm BRM Agro have said they will not plant unless they can secure a fixed price for the new crop. Vietnam's Mekong Delta growers are barely breaking even, with some considering reducing from three crops a year to two. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization's chief economist Maximo Torero stated that a further 20 to 30-day Hormuz closure would affect food availability as early as the second half of 2026. Thailand's dry-season crop in March–April could fall around 19 per cent from the same period in 2025, according to the Kasikorn Research Center. The International Rice Research Institute's senior scientist Alisher Mirzabaev noted that existing stocks provide a buffer but cautioned against complacency. #Philippines#Thailand @asianomics

🇵🇭🇨🇳Philippines opens Spratly coast guard command centre The Philippine Coast Guard activated its first dedicated command centre in the Spratly island chain on April 9, located on Pag-asa Island in the South China Sea. The facility replaces oversight previously managed from Palawan and will cover approximately 68,000 sq km. PCG Commandant Ronnie Gil Gavan stated that the new district will have a commodore-level commander stationed on site, along with a permanently assigned ship, additional response vessels, and specialist personnel. Plans also include dredging a deeper port to allow coast guard vessels to dock directly, replacing the current small-boat transfers. Multiple Chinese coast guard vessels were observed patrolling nearby waters during the activation ceremony, with the vessels issuing radio warnings to a plane carrying journalists. China's position holds that Pag-asa's roughly 400 Filipino residents are living there illegally. #Philippines#China @asianomics

🇵🇭🇺🇸Philippines Seeks Waivers for Sanctioned-Country Oil The Philippines is coordinating with the US State Department to obtain waivers and exemptions allowing it to purchase oil from US-sanctioned countries. Philippine Ambassador to the United States Jose Manuel Romualdez confirmed the talks, stating that all options — including Venezuela and Iran — are under consideration. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. declared a state of national energy emergency on March 25, citing supply disruptions stemming from the Middle East war. The government reported approximately 45 days of fuel supply remaining as of March 20 and is procuring an additional one million barrels to build buffer stock. At least two Russian ESPO crude cargoes are en route to the Philippines this month under a 30-day US sanctions waiver, marking the country's first Russian crude imports in five years. The US also issued a separate 30-day waiver covering Iranian oil already at sea and loaded on or before March 20. #Philippines#USA @asianomics
