Today 63 years ago on 27 October 1962, during the Cuban Missile Crisis, Vasili Alexandrovich Arkhipov, a Soviet Navy officer was credited with preventing a Soviet nuclear strike (and, presumably, all-out nuclear war) Such an attack likely would have caused a major global thermonuclear response.
