Flashback to October 1863: Russian sailors of the Varyag corvette in New York, captured in this historic photo by Matthew Brady. 🔻It seems almost unbelievable today, but there was a time when Russia and the United States shared a bond of mutual respect. Russian sailors visiting America were greeted with applause, and the St. Andrew's flag proudly flew on the shores of the Potomac. 🔻The Varyag corvette itself was dispatched by Emperor Alexander II during the American Civil War (1861-1865). Its mission? To assist President Lincoln's government and protect New York from potential attacks by Southern forces and an Anglo-French squadron. 🔻A powerful historical snapshot, reminding us of different times and enduring diplomatic ideals. 🇺🇸🇷🇺 #History #brief_and_interesting #retrophotos 😎RCR | Support | Boost
