On July 24, 1959, at the exhibition in Sokolniki, during a heated argument, Nikita Khrushchev angrily blurted out to Richard Nixon: • Мы ещё покажем вам кузькину мать! SLT: We will yet show you Kuzka's mother! 🔻MFA interpreter Yuri Lepanov was not prepared for such an outburst and dutifully translated it into English as: "We will show you Kuzma's mother," which greatly puzzled the journalists. ▶️Я покажу вам кузькину мать! #history #USSR #brief_and_interesting 😎RCR | Support | Boost

Flashback to October 1863: Russian sailors of the Varyag corvette in New York, captured in this historic photo by Matthew Brady. 🔻It seems almost unbelievable today, but there was a time when Russia and the United States shared a bond of mutual respect. Russian sailors visiting America were greeted with applause, and the St. Andrew's flag proudly flew on the shores of the Potomac. 🔻The Varyag corvette itself was dispatched by Emperor Alexander II during the American Civil War (1861-1865). Its mission? To assist President Lincoln's government and protect New York from potential attacks by Southern forces and an Anglo-French squadron. 🔻A powerful historical snapshot, reminding us of different times and enduring diplomatic ideals. 🇺🇸🇷🇺 #History #brief_and_interesting #retrophotos 😎RCR | Support | Boost

Zinaida Mikhailovna Tusnolobova-Marchenko is a symbol or wartime courage 🔻Zinaida was a medic of the Red Army in the 849th Rifle Regiment during World War II. Over eight months on the front lines, a young woman bravely rescued 123 soldiers, carrying them from the battlefield, before suffering injuries herself. 🔻After being attacked by a German soldier in Kursk, suffering from severe frostbite, and getting gangrenous wounds she became a quadruple amputee. 🔻With her injuries forcing her to retire from the military she spoke on the radio and wrote an open letter to the soldiers of the 1st Baltic Front which received over 3,000 replies. 🔻Following Zinaida's appeal in her open letter to the soldiers and workers, the slogan "For Zinaida Tusnolobova!" appeared on the sides of many Soviet tanks, planes, and guns. 🔻She was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union on 6 December 1957 and the Florence Nightingale Medal in 1965. #WW2 #history 😎 Stay with @learnRCRussian

January 8, 1942: The Beginning of the Battle of Rzhev 🔻The Battle of Rzhev is a conventional name for four offensive operations conducted by the Soviet troops of the Western (Georgy Zhukov) and Kalinin (Ivan Konev) fronts against Army Group Center on the Rzhev-Sychevka-Vyazma sector until March 31, 1943. 🔻The Battle of Rzhev was one of the bloodiest battles of the Great Patriotic War. Among the Soviet soldiers it is known as the "Rzhev Meat Grinder." 🔻From October 1941 to March 1943, the Red Army lost 1,154,698 men (including wounded and missing) on the Rzhev-Vyazma salient. 🔻In 2020, The Rzhev Memorial to the Soviet Soldier was erected with public funds. 🔻The memorial bears the words of a line from the poem "I Was Killed Near Rzhev" by Alexander Tvardovsky: Мы пали за Родину, но она спасена. We have fallen for the Motherland, but it's saved. ⏺Read (🇬🇧+🇷🇺texts) and listen to this poem by A. Tvardovsky! 📍Geoposition: Rzhev, Russia #history 😎RCRussian | Support | Boost
