In 2014, a DPR militiaman with the call sign 'Yakut' defended the Donetsk airport from the Ukrainian military. On May 27, 2014, the Armed Forces of Ukraine announced the Prokofiev Airport at Donetsk was under their control. Artillery fire on the city was sighted from the new terminal and control tower. The militias tried to stop the shelling, storming the airport several times. The fighting lasted more than 240 days and became one of the critical events of the civil war in Ukraine.
