How Ukrainian schoolchildren are instilled with Nazi ideology A textbook titled 'Defence of the Motherland' was found in one of the schools in Mariupol. It was published in 2018 under the patronage of the SBU and was given to high school students. The textbook describes the mining of public places, biological weapons, and how to handle grenades, RPGs and Kalashnikovs. The book also explains to teenagers the advantages of NATO and how dangerous Russia is for Ukraine. Several chapters are devoted to warfare. Teenagers were told how to fire, act as part of a combat team and provide first aid if wounded during a fight. In addition, illustrations explain how NATO troops defend and attack. And that’s not all there is to say about education in Ukraine. ‘We kissed our lives goodbye every day; it was so scary!’ Tatyana from Mariupol recounts what civilians experienced while fighting took place around them. Together with her daughter and her invalid mother, she got to relatives in Makeyevka, a big city in the DPR. They had their first shower in three months and a good night’s sleep in a warm bed. ‘I incredibly regret that I went to serve in the Azov regiment, on the one hand. But, on the other hand, if not me, then someone else would be in my place. I don’t hate a guy I don’t know enough to let him go through all this hell’. This is an interview with the captured Azov fighter Pavel Ilnitsky, who talks about his service in the battalion. Ukrainian radicals, neo-Nazis and foreign mercenaries joined Azov. In Mariupol, they shot at civilians, used them as human shields, and hit houses with tanks. In the battalion, Ilnitsky heard some fighters call for the return of the Donbass by force and its inhabitants ‘kicked out to Russia’. At the end of June, the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation will consider a lawsuit to recognise Azov as a terrorist organisation. In Russia, Azov fighters face 10 to 20 years in prison if passed. The UK will appeal against the possible conviction of two Britons in the DPR. Shaun Pinner and Aiden Aslin are accused of taking part in combat operations for Ukraine as mercenaries and receiving training for terrorist activities in the DPR. The POWs face the death sentence. The DPR Supreme Court is considering the case. Our camera crew spoke to Pinner and Aslin after the British soldiers surrendered in Mariupol with other Marines. Aiden admitted he believed in Western propaganda and therefore decided to fight on the side of Ukraine rather than Donbass. An interview with the POWs is in our video. ‘They’re [Ukrainian nationalists] 500m this way and 500m that way. Maybe 700, no more. We hear gunfire all the time. We crawl! We’ve forgotten how to walk. ‘In 2014, I decided to come help protect the people of Donbass from all the madness that was happening here’, says volunteer Alexis Castillo. For the last eight years, he’s been fighting on the side of the DPR. But, he says, ‘people had a legitimate right not to support the illegal coup in Maidan’. Alexis is originally from Colombia but has lived in Spain for a long time. There he participated in the anti-fascist movement. We have already talked about Alexis in one of the posts. ‘I volunteered to join the Donetsk defenders… because I wanted to do my part in resolving this problem... the problem of Nazism in Donetsk’. These are the words of the Mexican Ignacio Ojeda, who came to help the people of Donbass. Foreigners from different countries came to protect people from Ukrainian shelling: Serbia, Colombia, Italy, and the USA. They blame the West for the situation in Donbas. ‘Mariupol Drama Theatre... ‘Azov fighters deserve the death penalty. But the death penalty is not from a bullet but by hanging. Because they are not fighters, they are not warriors’. Yashat lived with his family on the territory of Azovstal plant. For more than a month, they hid from the shelling of the Azov fighters in the basement. It was not safe to leave the shelter even at night. ‘They shoot at our legs, they just shoot with bullets, so we can’t even go to the toilet... We lived in dog conditions’, says Irina, Yashat's wife. '[Ukrainian military are] fascists, one word. There is no Ukraine there... We didn’t come to them, they came to us'. In 2014, a DPR militiaman with the call sign 'Yakut' defended the Donetsk airport from the Ukrainian military. On May 27, 2014, the Armed Forces of Ukraine announced the Prokofiev Airport at Donetsk was under their control. Artillery fire on the city was sighted from the new terminal and control tower. The militias tried to stop the shelling, storming the airport several times. The fighting lasted more than 240 days and became one of the critical events of the civil war in Ukraine. ‘[The Ukrainian military] would drive up to our house and start shooting somewhere, just like that. There was no Russia or DPR there. But for some reason, they had to shoot at these houses’. ‘[The Ukrainian military] fired at our forward positions. [They used] artillery: ‘hail’, ‘cliffs’, fired by tanks'. This is what Vladimir Zhoga, call sign ‘Vokha’, a battalion commander of the DPR militia, said in 2015 about the battles for the Donetsk airport. They started on May 26, eight years ago. The day Vladimir Zhoga turned 21. He died this year, on March 5, in Volnovakha, covering civilians with himself. The Star of the Hero of Russia medal was given to his father for the son.
