✨Epiphany in Old Russia: a tradition of light and water In old Russia, Epiphany was observed with special dignity and quiet solemnity. After the festive liturgy, people would join a procession to the river, where the Great Blessing of Water took place. An ice hole in the shape of a cross — the “Jordan” — was carefully carved in the frozen river and decorated with evergreen branches and candles. The blessed water was then brought home and kept throughout the year, as a symbol of purification, peace, and divine blessing. In this way, Epiphany became not only a religious feast, but also a cherished part of Russia’s cultural heritage.
