📰 NEWS | Venezuela Urges ‘Good Faith Negotiations’ on Essequibo Territorial Dispute Venezuela commemorated the 60th anniversary of the 1966 Geneva Agreement by reaffirming its claim over the 160,000 square-kilometer Essequibo territory and urging Guyana to pursue “good faith negotiations.” Caracas said the agreement is the sole valid mechanism to resolve the dispute and rejected the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice. Guyana responded that the Geneva Agreement did not annul the 1899 Arbitral Award and noted that in 2018 the UN Secretary-General referred the case to the ICJ as the final means of settlement.
