📰 NEWS | Venezuela ‘Deports’ Former Minister, Diplomatic Envoy Alex Saab to US The Venezuelan government turned former minister and diplomatic envoy Alex Saab over to US authorities on Saturday, describing the move as the “deportation of Colombian citizen Alex Saab Morán.” According to the official SAIME statement, the measure was adopted because Saab was “implicated in various crimes” in the US Local media reported that he was transferred from Caracas to Miami aboard a US government aircraft. Saab had previously been returned to Venezuela in December 2023 as part of a prisoner exchange after receiving a presidential pardon from then-US President Joe Biden. During his prior detention, Saab’s legal team argued that he held Venezuelan nationality and diplomatic immunity, while Venezuela’s constitution prohibits the extradition of citizens. The government statement did not explain the legal procedure behind Saab’s removal or why the operation was framed as a “deportation” rather than an extradition.
