🖊🗞COLUMN | Venezuelan Women and the Living Tradition of Joropo In the first delivery of the Cultural Re-existence column, Fabiola José and Fidel Barbarito examine joropo and the historical role women have played in sustaining this cultural expression. Joropo, Venezuela’s most widespread traditional rhythm, was declared national cultural heritage in 2014 and was later inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2025, recognizing it as a living cultural system rooted in community practices. In Caracas, the third “Mujer Joropo” gathering brought together more than 20 women artists, highlighting their role as creators, performers, and transmitters of ancestral knowledge across generations. Such initiatives seek to address women’s unequal participation in the artistic sphere while contributing to the preservation and promotion of joropo as an ongoing cultural practice.
