🇧🇫#BurkinaFaso: JNIM militants launched a massive attack on the town of Manni, burning large parts of it and overrunning the military base. The assault reportedly involved hundreds of fighters. At the same time, residents in several areas hit by recent attacks are now negotiating directly with JNIM leadership. In the third attached video, a local leader says the population has no say in the interim president’s decisions and that he is "concerned" by them. Several reports are mentioning the talks that are happening are on terms that favour JNIM. (via @CartesDuMonde & @thinkstrataf on X; @warnews on TG)

🇧🇫#BurkinaFaso: Footage shows the Burkina Faso Armed Forces carrying out multiple drone strikes against JNIM militants as they withdrew from the northern town of Titao. The jihadists had earlier attacked a military camp and destroyed telephone facilities and shops on February 14th. Over the past week, JNIM fighters have killed dozens of soldiers and civilians and overrun at least one army position in coordinated attacks across multiple regions. What stands out over these recent attacks is that lately, the group seems to able to mobilize its militants across large parts of territory and conduct raids simultaneously: military camps and civilian settlements in Bilanga, Titao, Tandjari, and Nare were attacked at the same time. In Titao specifically, reports indicate that around 80 soldiers and pro-government militia troops were killed during the fighting. (📹 via @fabsenbln on X)

🇧🇫#BurkinaFaso: JNIM militants attacked the town of Titao in northern Burkina Faso today, targeting a military camp. Initial reports said the fighters attempted to enter the town in small groups but were pushed off by government forces. However, later footage circulating online shows destroyed antennas and heavy damage at the military position. Casualties remain unclear, and it is not confirmed whether the camp was fully overrun. 🇧🇫#BurkinaFaso: ISIS in Sahel has executed several Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin militants somewhere in Burkina Faso. This kind of infighting between jihadist militant groups is not uncommon. At times, the temporary ceasefires between these two groups is also referred to as the “Sahel exception.” While several factors influence such infighting (control, territory, etc.), the main reason is ideological: JNIM is loyal to Al-Qaeda, while ISIS in the Sahel (more commonly known as ISGS) is loyal to the Islamic State, following a violent split around 2013. Moreover, there is also an ethnic dimension regarding recruitment that prompts this conflict: ISIS is more likely to recruit marginalised ethnic groups in Burkina Faso, while JNIM focuses primarily on the Fulani ethnic group.
