⚡️BRICS Joint Media Statement following the Meeting of BRICS Ministers of Foreign Affairs/International Relations on the margins of 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (New York, September 26) 👉Read in full (Telegraph: I, II) Key points: • The Ministers reaffirmed their commitment to multilateralism, multipolarity and upholding international law, including the purposes and principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations (UN), in their entirety and interconnectedness as its indispensable cornerstone and the central role of the UN in the international system. • The Ministers reiterated their commitment to ensuring greater and more meaningful participation and representation of Emerging Markets and Developing Countries (EMDCs), as well as Least Developed Countries (LDCs), especially from Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, in global decision-making processes and structures and making them better attuned to contemporary realities. • The Ministers called for more just and equitable global governance and mutually beneficial relations among nations based on international law with an enhanced role for the Global South and the developing world in global governance. • The Ministers reiterated their support for a comprehensive reform of the United Nations, including its Security Council, with a view to making it more democratic, representative, effective and efficient, and to increase the representation of developing countries in the Council’s memberships so that it can adequately respond to prevailing global challenges and support the legitimate aspirations of emerging and developing countries from Africa, Asia and Latin America, including #BRICS countries, to play a greater role in international affairs, in particular in the United Nations, including its Security Council. • The Ministers expressed concern over proliferation of trade-restrictive actions, whether in the form of indiscriminate rising of tariffs and non-tariff measures, or protectionism, in particular measures used as a means of coercion that threaten to further reduce global trade, disrupt global supply chains, and introduce uncertainty into international economic and trade activities, potentially exacerbating existing economic disparities and affecting prospects for global economic development. • The Ministers commended four consecutive developing countries as G20 Presidencies of Indonesia, India, Brazil, and South Africa during 2022-2025. They applauded the inclusion of the African Union as a full G20 member and the inclusion of voices from the Global South in the G20 mandate. • The Ministers condemned the military strikes against the Islamic Republic of Iran since 13 June 2025, which constitute a violation of international law and the Charter of the United Nations, and expressed grave concern over the subsequent escalation of the security situation in the Middle East. • Cognizant of the growing complexity in contemporary global challenges, including heightened geopolitical tensions, they underscored the urgent need for collective responses. The Ministers agreed that BRICS will continue to play a proactive and constructive role in addressing global challenges through dialogue and diplomacy. • The Ministers noted that the BRICS expansion reflects its influence, credibility, and appeal as an important platform for inclusive global governance and for amplifying the collective voices from the Global South. In this regard, they underscored the need for enhanced coordination, continuity and support for a long-term institutional development of the grouping.

The Russian Foreign Ministry summed up the results of Russia’s BRICS chairmanship in the first half of 2024 Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova spoke about the interim results of the country's BRICS Chairship, according to the ministry's official website. “The year 2024 is a special year for us with Russia acting as #BRICS chair. Our chairmanship has entered a decisive phase. More than 130 events have been held at various levels across the three main cooperation areas, including politics and security, the economy and finance, and cultural and humanitarian contacts. A number of specialised meetings have been held as part of the political bloc, primarily, the meeting of the BRICS foreign ministers in Nizhny Novgorod on June 10-11. An extended session with the participation of representatives from the Global South and the Global East countries, as well as the countries chairing regional organizations, including Bahrain, Bangladesh, Belarus, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Laos, Mauritania, Thailand, Türkiye, Sri Lanka, Venezuela and Vietnam, was held as part of the meeting”. According to Zakharova, coordination between the BRICS countries at international forums, primarily at the UN, continues to make strides. “The joint theme-driven statement by the BRICS delegations on the sidelines of the sixth session of the UN Environment Assembly (Nairobi, February 26-March 1) offers a good example”. In the economic sphere, the BRICS countries are discussing ways to promote sustainable development, to support the multilateral trading system, and to improve the global financial architecture. "Pursuant to the decisions of the 2023 Johannesburg BRICS Summit, the BRICS countries are working on ways to create financial facilities for mutual settlements that are immune to external risks and to increase the share of national currencies in trade and investment transactions. In particular, these issues were discussed at the meetings of BRICS finance ministers and central bank governors on the sidelines of G20 events." According to the briefing given by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' official representative, special attention is also paid to strengthening BRICS partnership in the fields of healthcare, food security, technological cooperation, and energy security. During its presidency, as is customary, cultural and humanitarian cooperation was highlighted. The BRICS International Film Festival (April 19-23), the BRICS Academic Forum (May 22-24), the BRICS Civil Forum (July 3-4) and many other events with the participation of experts, civil society representatives from our countries, and cultural figures have taken place on this track. #NEWS#diplomacy#RussianChairship#CivilBRICS#AcademicForum#Forum
