Wadi al-Salam means ‘Valley of Peace’, and its where many Shia Muslims are eager to be buried because they will be close to Imam Ali. He was a Shiite holy man who was cousin and son-in-law to the Prophet Muhammed. The cemetery workers know every nook and cranny of this giant burial ground. Poor education is one of the reasons why young boys are easily dragged into prostitution. They haven’t the qualifications to get a decent job. Some boys claim they were underaged when these older women from Germany, Switzerland, and other countries approached them for sex. Like young girls who also fall victims to sex tourists, the boys soon grow up and stop being “eligible” for the job. So they try to get as much as they can while it is still possible. The nonprofits and volunteers who work in Kenya are doing their best to educate children by building schools. This is the only way to ensure they will have a future and change their way of thinking. Raquel de Oliveira is one of the women who had to establish herself in the criminal underworld from an early age. At the age of nine, her grandmother sold her to a gambling den owner. Later, she married the drug lord of La Rocinha, the largest favela in Rio. When he was killed in a police raid, Raquel became a drug trafficker herself. He’s seen what happens after children lose their families and homes in tragic events like these. ‘Most of them were sniffing acetone. They were wearing rags, and their hair was matted,’ the Baghdad resident says. Hicham started working with street kids in 2003. He first took in four street boys to live with his family. From there, his concern has grown into the Iraqi Safe House for Creativity, where children can feel safe and find a hobby. Dozens of boys have gone through Hicham’s orphanage over the years. Muqtada was brought to Hicham’s orphanage by his mother, who’s afraid he’s spending too much time on the streets.
