On May 6, Syria celebrates the day of the martyrs. In 1916, those who fought for the country’s independence were executed. But their fight has been going on for a hundred years. In 2017 the country was in the middle of a war. More than ten years of war in Syria caused over 600,000 deaths. Thousands of children lost their parents. As a young boy, Leith saw his family gunned down. We filmed him with his grandmother five years after the trauma. Watch how they were getting by in the video. The full story of Leith is in our documentary Syria: The Story of One Tragedy. #video#Syria Follow: https://t.me/rtdocumentary

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari says the armed gangs that kidnapped passengers on a train in Kaduna used them as human shields. The governor of Kaduna state suggests the attack could be the result of a partnership between Boko Haram and other Nigerian kidnap gangs. At the end of April, one of the abducted women gave birth in captivity. According to the Nigerian Railway Corporation, more than 150 people are still missing. Armed gangs have been terrorising Nigeria for years. Boko Haram is one of the world’s deadliest terrorist groups. Some Nigerians can’t stand aside while kidnapping, rapes, and killings happen. For example, Aisha leads a vigilante group that helps government forces fight terrorists. She’s called the ‘queen’ of Boko Haram hunters. #video#Nigeria “A chicken, the blood and everything, you have to swallow the liver of the chicken. It’s part of the process. You come into Europe, you don’t have a choice, you don’t have a say. It’s obligated, you have to do it.” A former sex slave from Nigeria tells how she, afraid of the voodoo curse, preferred not to testify against her former masters. When a major human trafficking case was uncovered in Europe, ex-slaves who were forced into prostitution refused to testify. An African priest had to save the girls from the curse. #video#Vietnam The Vietnam War ended 47 years ago, and the consequences are still being felt by the people of the country. Children are born with genetic diseases. And all because of the poison Agent Orange, which the Americans sprayed on the forests where the partisans were. The Agent Orange Victims Association president, retired General Nguyen Van Rin, says: ‘The Americans knew from the very beginning of the consequences, although they constantly lied that the ‘agent’ is not dangerous to people, but only destroys the jungle’. #video#Indonesia One tradition from Java allows young boys to be legally exploited by much older men. The boys are called Gemblaks. Their old masters are known as Waroks. Waroks are revered shaman-like figures who are believed to have magical powers. Their gift comes at a price - they can’t be involved with women since they can strip them of their abilities. But Waroks can ‘rent out’ young boys. Young servants help their Waroks around the house, assist in rituals, … and more. Since children are expected to show unquestioning obedience, they are often told to sleep with their masters. Pak Dirman used to serve a Warok, when he was little. #video#Benin In Benin, many children skip school because they are sent to voodoo convents. They are given new names and are forbidden to use their old ones or speak their native language. Families send their children to a monastery to appease the spirits if parents or a child falls sick. But it’s not easy to go back. A release ceremony costs $50, an unaffordable sum for most families. Watch the video in our post to learn what happens inside voodoo convents. To know more about the voodoo monasteries, watch the premiere of our film Voodoo Brides. Follow: https://t.me/rtdocumentary

#video#Germany Anneliese Michel was a German girl who believed demons possessed her. The girl underwent 67 rites of exorcism, during which she ate dead insects and animals, barked like a dog and licked her urine off the floor. Anneliese died on June 1, 1976, of malnutrition and dehydration. Her parents and the priests who performed the exorcism rituals were severely criticised and eventually had to stand trial. Medical specialists said Anneliese’s mental disorder resulted partially from the exceptionally severe religious upbringing: she had been persuaded to suffer for the sins and obediently fulfilled this mission. According to testimonies, she could have survived if she had been force-fed at least a week before her death. However, there were things in this case that had no rational explanation, and what happened will forever remain a mystery. Follow: https://t.me/rtdocumentary
