Russian dream
#video#Russia
British trader John Kopiski came to Russia in the 1990s on a business trip that changed his life. ‘After Perestroika, everybody was so hospitable. It was a new life; capitalism hadn’t arrived’. So John jumped at the opportunity to move to Russia at the age of 42 because he felt at home.
John eventually met a Russian woman, converted to Orthodoxy and fathered five children. Together they run a massive farm with more than 4,000 cows in the Vladimir region. They produce 50 tonnes of milk every day, and John has taken up cheese production following EU sanctions against Russia.
‘As an Englishman, I have no loyalty there. I have lots of anger and disappointment,’ John says. Nevertheless, he takes pride in his newfound motherland and says his relatives in the UK don’t get his love for Russia.

Seeing the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights should be on anyone’s bucket list. The multicolour curtains of light have captivated people for thousands of years. Inuit, Norse, Finnish and Icelandic legends describe the most incredible origins of the dancing lights.
However, the most recent myth has driven tourism for an Aurora hunt in Russia’s Murmansk region. According to Chinese superstition, if you conceive under the Northern Lights, it will be a boy. Others believe the Northern Lights baby is in for a happy life. Local businesses endorse the myth and offer rooms with North-facing windows and a transparent roof.
Have you ever seen the Aurora Borealis?

Aviator Girl
#video#Russia
The profession of a pilot was inaccessible for women in Russia till the late 2000s. But once it opened, it became very popular.
Girls fall in love with the sky and enter flying schools regardless of the imminent hardships and busy schedules. Some become acrobatics pilots and surprise the audience by performing deadly stunts; others join civil aviation and fly massive aircraft across oceans or transport people to remote villages and towns. Even being on the brink of an accident or fuelling up the plane in the 30 degrees C frost doesn’t scare them.
So while Katya, an aerobatics pilot, is getting ready for the next competition and practices her dead loops surviving the g-load, Maria works long shifts on her Boeing 737, not knowing when she will make it home.
Tune in for the premiere of Aviator Girl on RT Documentary and learn stories of other girls who joined aviation.

Aurus is Vladimir Putin’s state-of-the-art presidential car. It was designed especially for the Russian president and produced in a record five years – a strikingly short period for such a large project.
It was a real challenge to create automobile #1 from scratch and make it just in time for Vladimir Putin’s inauguration in May 2018. To meet this challenge and create a true masterpiece of the automobile industry, the project team used the experience of renowned national and foreign carmakers, cutting-edge technology like 3D printing, as well as knotty marketing schemes.
How did they make it?

From white-collar to freediving champion
#video#Russia
Andrey Matveenko used to be an economist and worked in an office. He has always been into sport, but when he tried freediving, that was it. He quit his accounting job and became a full-time freediver.
Andrey became an instructor and set multiple records by diving deeper than 100 metres. Having conquered warm seas, his friends dared Andrey to try it in cold water, under the ice.
Freediving is challenging in itself, as athletes plunge to great depths while holding their breath. Try doing that when the water is minus 2 degrees Celcius. Andrey took it to a different level and decided to break the world record of 71 metres.
How do you think he did? Find out here.

Wildfire Warriors
#video#Russia
The summer of 2021 has become devastating for the Russian taiga. Recently, wildfires are spreading at a critical rate because of climate change and the collapse of agriculture. Extensive areas are grassed over and set on fire easily. This is why the Russian Aerial Forest Protection Service is out fighting the fires on one of their longest tours on the job.
Aerial Forest Protection Service is a unit in charge of putting out wildfires. The aircraft we see spraying the forest from above are only trying to cool it down to let the firefighters do their job. They get parachuted to the site and start their work. They have to act very quickly because there is always a chance of a fire spreading. They dig firebreaks and set up backfires. No need to say that their job can often get dangerous or even life-threatening. But they still manage to soldier on.
Tune in for the premiere of Wildfire Warriors and see what it takes to become a firefighter.

Life on Mars? 👩🚀
#video#Russia
Many children say they want to be astronauts. However, few of us ever get to pursue that childhood dream of exploring beyond our world. Anastasia Stepanova from Moscow made a decision when Mars One announced plans to send humans on a one-way mission to the Red Planet by 2023.
Many candidates were willing to set out on the journey but few made it to the shortlist and Anastasia was one of them, but the project has since been put on hold. Even so, she hasn’t stopped preparing for the trip. She took a degree course in engineering and spent three months in a Mars surface simulator in the Utah desert as part of another project called, Mars 160.
World Space Week has just begun and this year’s theme is, ‘Women in Space’. Celebrate the feminine side of the space sector, check out Anastasia’s story in our documentary - https://youtu.be/kOnjU_mGTMk

Born in prison
#video#Russia
Clearly, these babies aren't criminals, but they still live behind bars. That’s because their mothers have been convicted of fraud, drug offences or theft. Female prisoners who give birth are only able to spend the first three years with their children. After that, the toddlers and mothers are separated.
While Russia's penal system does allow mothers to be in special cells with their children all the time, not everyone wants the opportunity. A mother who is taking care of her child is not allowed to smoke. Some mothers choose a cigarette over being with their baby all the time.
Here’s an inside look at life for imprisoned mothers in Russia - https://youtu.be/R-OZalEaTKg
Do you think it’s fair that young children live in prison with their mothers?
