Till death do us part? #video#Russia Margarita Gracheva’s life took a tragic turn on December 11, 2017. Her husband Dmitry, the father of her two children, drove her to the woods, tied her wrists with plastic straps, and chopped off both her hands with an axe. He then took Margarita to the hospital and turned himself in. “If you’re not mine, you’ll be disabled,” he repeated as he tortured Margarita. Their marriage had been crumbling. Dmitry suddenly became jealous and suspicious when Margarita asked for a divorce. She says her husband planned it all ahead of time and felt no remorse. Dmitry is now serving a 14-year sentence, while Margarita has reinvented herself as a campaigner for stricter domestic violence laws in Russia. Doctors managed to surgically reattach on of her hands and replaced the other with a bionic prosthetic. Margarita is married again and is expecting her third child. World War Zero #video#Russia We all know World War I and II, but few have heard of WW Zero. The Russian Empire fought for world dominance with Turkey, France, Great Britain, and a number of other countries. Casualties in Crimea were roughly 309,000 people. An international group of historians travelled to Crimea to excavate the mass graves and to rebury the fallen soldiers. They saw it as an act of dignity that would give closure and solace to the families whose ancestors died in the war. Bone fragments and clothing artefacts helped identify the soldiers, and modern technology helped scientists recreate the appearance and even identify the soldiers' ailments when they were alive. This amazing quest has contributed a lot to the general knowledge of the war. Tune in to watch the premiere of World War Zero: Lost in Actionright now on RT Documentary. Black in the USSR #video#Russia Did you know that scores of African Americans moved to the Soviet Union in the 1930s? Soviet antiracism and career opportunities contrasted with the oppression and economic hardship in the US, and attracted black Americans to the Soviet Union. Jim Patterson's father, Lloyd Patterson, was one of those who came to seek freedom behind the Iron Curtain. RT's correspondent Konstantin Rozhkov @Spetscorr met Jim and other Afro-Russians during the filming of 'Black in the USSR'. Check it out to hear the whole story. Follow: https://t.me/rtdocumentary

Mysterious Arctic Holes #video#Russia Scientists have been trying to unravel a geological mystery in the Yamal tundra. Giant, perfectly round holes have been appearing in the permafrost since 2013. The holes, which can reach up to 30 metres in depth, look as if they were left by powerful blasts or meteorite impacts. While researchers have been exploring a massive gas emissions theory, the local Nenets people have their own explanation. The Nenets are nomadic reindeer herders whose life revolves around nature. They believe the holes may be a bad omen, or a warning that “someone sometime did something wrong.” Follow: https://t.me/rtdocumentary

Russia’s ‘Papa Bear’ dies, but his legacy lives on #video#Russia When bear cubs are separated or abandoned by their mothers, they have very little chance of surviving on their own 🐻 Russian biologist Valentin Pazhetnov dedicated his life to rescuing little bears and preparing them for life in the wilderness. He came up with a unique method that allows cubs to be raised by humans but remain wild. Specialists at Valentin’s Orphan Bear Rescue Centre provide baby bears round-the-clock care but avoid bonding with them. “The main thing about our method is to preserve their fear of humans,” Valentin said. Valentin’s centre, which is now run by his son and grandson, is considered a world leader in bear rehabilitation. They’ve helped over 200 bears return to the wilderness where they belong. In early June, Valentin tragically died at the age of 84. You can learn more about Valentin Pazhetnov’s work in our documentary. Click below to watch. Follow: https://t.me/rtdocumentary

How our film crew escaped a polar bear attack #video#Russia When you're a filmmaker, you have to be ready for any situation, like encountering a wild polar bear! Our film crew came across one during the shooting of 'Freed to Be Wild' in Kamchatka. The polar bear didn't retreat, while our crew and bear warden Tatyana only had flares and their voices. However, Tatyana had told the crew what to do. "I had to remember Tatyana's lessons, so together with the entire film crew, we growled and waved tripods and sticks over our heads," director Natalya Karachkova recalls. In the Kamchatka peninsula, polar bears are a common sight. The predators have become frequent visitors to villages along the coastline. They're attracted by delicious Pacific walruses, who now spend more time on the mainland and less on the sea-ice that is slowly disappearing. That's why locals know this life-saving skill very well. Phew! The polar bear looks adorable, but only from a safe distance, right? Follow: https://t.me/rtdocumentary

Ivan’s pet wolf🐺 #video#Russia In Russia, we don’t keep bears as pets. But some like Ivan keep wolves. When Ivan was offered a wolf cub to adopt, he agreed without giving it a second thought. Otherwise, the tiny animal would’ve been killed. Ivan brought the wolf to live with him in a one-room flat he shared with his daughter and their two dogs. So Ivan started a blog to raise some money for the expensive meat his wolf is partial to devouring in large quantities. The blog was apparently so successful that it has recently allowed Ivan and his pack to move to a country house, where the wolf will be able to roam in a spacious enclosure. Agafia of Siberia #video#Russia Agafia Lykova hasn’t been bothered by the pandemic in the slightest. That’s because she has been living deep in the Siberian taiga all by herself for quite some time! Agafia was born 77 years ago to a family of Old Believers, members of an Orthodox Christian sect who fled religious persecution during Soviet times. When Agafia’s family was first discovered in 1978, they looked like peasants straight from the 18th century. That was the first time she had ever met outsiders. All her family members are long gone, but Agafia has never left her hut in the forest. She reads the Bible, speaks old Slavonic and remains self-sufficient to this day. Nothing has changed for her, except for the journalists who come from time to time to film the Siberian hermit. Follow: https://t.me/rtdocumentary
