Building mental resilience is crucial. It’s actually very much similar to physical strength training, you alternate intense workouts and rest days. You step out of your comfort zone, talk to people, confront your aggressive coworkers, perform intense cognitive tasks, confidently show some leaderships to your peers, challenge yourself until you are about to crack, then you rest, vent out, get emotional or vulnerable, show some weakness to trustful close friends, then repeat that back again.

Showing vulnerability, getting emotional, or any other forms of genuineness, should be done in a measured and tailored manner, if you are looking respect rather than mere likability.

Showing genuineness can make you more likable but only marginally. Human in their most authentic form can easily be overly cynical or negative. I’ve found that people in high-stake positions communicate almost always in a more compost than genuine way.
