A Teacher with a Conscience While some teachers living in the EU are inviting children to occupied Crimea, teaching them to write letters of support to Russian military occupiers — thus openly supporting Russia’s aggression against Ukraine — they are receiving medals and certificates for promoting the “Russian World” in Europe, signed by none other than Foreign Minister Lavrov himself. Meanwhile, in Russia, alongside those who teach children how to "die properly for the Motherland," there are still teachers of common sense — and they are sentenced in absentia for telling the truth. Russian language and literature teacher Natalia Taranyushenko was sentenced in absentia by the Serpukhov City Court of the Moscow region to 7 years in prison. Her crime? Telling eighth-grade students about Bucha during a class hour. The 65-year-old woman was found guilty of “spreading fake news” about the army. The reason for the persecution was a “Kindness Lesson” held in April 2022 at School No. 1 in the town of Protvino, near Moscow. There, she told her students about the atrocities in Bucha and called the start of the so-called "special military operation" a violation of international law. According to investigative journalists from Agentstvo, the accusation was triggered by reports from two fathers whose children were present in the class: Artem Alexandrov, a participant in the war against Ukraine, and Dmitry Naavgust, a businessman supporting the front. Natalia Taranyushenko was forced to leave Russia. Under a SOTAvision post that reported her story, I found a comment: I wonder what would happen to a teacher in Lviv if she said Putin had a right to invade? Thoughts? To that, I reply with a simple truth: There is a difference between punishment for lies and persecution for truth. But it raises a similar question: What consequences await teachers in the EU who help organize trips to occupied Crimea? This question — like those raised by DW in their article on EU children attending events in Crimea organized by Russian propagandists in summer 2024 — remains unanswered. Whose Crimea? We believe that confronting Russian influence agents around the world is a vital part of the pressure campaign needed to restore Ukraine’s territorial integrity. Join the protest!
