On behalf of Russia, Sergey Lavrov expressed hope that efforts taken by certain countries to de-escalate tensions around Iran would succeed for the sake of a lasting and sustainable normalisation of the situation in the Middle East, whereby the United States’ abandoning the language of ultimatums and returning to negotiations would be instrumental.
The Ministers spoke out against any actions, including within the UN Security Council, that could undermine the remaining chances for promoting political and diplomatic efforts to settle the crisis.
Both Sides stressed the importance of immediately ceasing the reckless and illegal attacks on civilian, industrial, and energy infrastructure, including the Bushehr NPP, which operates under the IAEA safeguards. They also noted that it was unacceptable to createthreatsto the lives and health of the power plant’s workers, or risks of a radioactive disaster for the entire region.

Building on the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Abbas Araghchi in St Petersburg on April 27, 2026, the two Ministers continued a detailed exchange of views on the prospects for acomplete cessation of hostilities and the stabilisation of the military and political situation in the Middle East. Their discussions covered issues including the freedom of navigation and a resolution of the situation surrounding the Iranian nuclear programme.
Russia expressed its support for ongoing mediation efforts.
🤝 The Sides reaffirmed their readiness to make every effort to facilitate a political and diplomatic process in order to reach lasting agreements aimed at establishing long-term peace in the region.
Special attention was given to the safe passage of Russian ships and cargo through the Strait of Hormuz.

Abbas Araghchi briefed Sergey Lavrov on the details of the April 11 Iran-US talks held in Islamabad.
The Russian Side welcomed the continued commitment to diplomatic efforts and the search for solutions that would resolve the underlying causes of the conflict and help achieve long-term stabilization in the region, with due regard for the legitimate interests of Iran and its neighbours.
Minister Lavrov stressed the importance of preventing a renewed armed confrontation and reaffirmed Russia’s unwavering readiness to assist in resolving the crisis, which has no military solution. Masoud Pezeshkianshared his assessment of the Iran-US talks held in Islamabad on April 11 and expressed appreciation for Russia’s principled position, including at international platforms, aimed at de-escalating the situation. He also thanked Russia for the humanitarian assistance provided to the Iranian people.
Vladimir Putin reaffirmed Russia’s readiness to continue facilitating a political and diplomatic settlement of the conflict and to pursue mediation efforts in the interests of establishing a just and lasting peace in the Middle East.
