On 23 March 2026, Ambassador of Russia to South Africa Roman Ambarov attended a Day of Reflection on Resistance and Liberation Heritage in commemoration of the Battle of Cuito Cuanavale at Freedom Park in Pretoria.
The keynote address was delivered by Deputy Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture of South Africa, Hon. Ms Peace Mabe. Among the participants were Hon. Ms Nomvula Mokonyane, First Deputy Secretary-General of the African National Congress, as well as heads of diplomatic missions from Cuba, Angola, and Namibia, ANC representatives, and veterans of the Battle of Cuito Cuanavale.
🎙 Addressing the participants, Ambassador Roman Ambarov emphasized that the Battle of #CuitoCuanavalewasa turning pointof the Civil War in Angola.
The victory of the People’s Armed Forces of Liberation of Angola contributed directly to the peace process in Namibia and helped pave the way for the eventual liberation of South Africa.
“Cuito Cuanavale became a symbol of resistance against oppression. It demonstrated that even in the face of overwhelming force, the determination of people fighting for their rights cannot be defeated. It was here that the tide began to turn - not only in Angola, but across the region.
The role played by the Soviet Union in supporting Angola during this difficult period remains an important part of this history. Through the various means of assistance and political support, it contributed to strengthening the defence of Angola’s sovereignty. Soviet advisers worked alongside Angolan and Cuban forces, sharing knowledge, resources, and a belief in a just cause.
But what truly defined this moment was solidarity to fight together against the colonial yoke. It was the understanding that the struggle of one people is the concern of all humanity. The fight in Angola echoed the voices of those resisting apartheid in South Africa and colonial rule in Namibia. It was one struggle, fought on many fronts,” the Russian Ambassador said.
As part of the event, Roman Ambarov laid wreath to the Russian section of the Wall of Names in memory of Soviet military specialists who participated in conflicts in Southern Africa.
ℹ️ The Battle of Cuito Cuanavale (August 1987 – March 1988) was a decisive engagement of the Angolan Civil War and a crucial step in the struggle for independence of the countries of Southern Africa from colonialism and apartheid. During the battle, the People’s Armed Forces of Liberation of Angola backed by #USSR, #Cuba, People’s Liberation Army of #Namibia, African National Congress (#ANC) and others defeated the combatants of the Angolan “UNITA” party and the racist regime of the Republic of South Africa supported by the US.

Poemas y anécdotas de poetas, músicos, amigos y familiares de la escritora Lalita, la recordaron también este lunes, cuando instituciones reconocieron el quehacer de esta valiosa institución holguinera, y el propio centro agasajara a creadores diversos en su acompañamiento por estos años.
El primer secretario del Partido en el territorio Osmany Viñals García asistió al encuentro y agradeció el estar en la peña "El duende y los amigos", un espacio "para no olvidar la cultura y las tradiciones".
😃 Hemos recibido la condición "Amigo de la #FEU" (Federación Estudiantil Universitaria), en el marco del acto por el Día del Educador de la Universidad de Ciencias Médicas de Holguín.

После триумфальной премьеры фильма «Пираты XX века», состоявшейся в предолимпийский год, на следующий же после сеанса день завуч нашей школы уже разбирала на внеочередном родительском собрании поведение юных кинозрителей:
«Они же теперь натурально по стенам ходят! – Возмущалась она – Вы посмотрите на школьные коридоры! Отпечатки ног –до самого потолка! С этим вопиющим безобразием надо что-то незамедлительно делать!»
А что тут было уже поделать, если даже в меру упитанные и воспитанные мальчики (и даже девочки!..) вопили «Яяяяя!» и делали вид, что владеют приемами карате. Предпринимать что-либо было поздно... Школьники всей страны снова и снова смотрели полюбившийся фильм в кинотеатрах, пока не выросли, а потом продолжили его смотреть, уже став взрослыми, – на видеомагнитофонах, различных гаджетах, онлайн в социальных сетях. Если и была самая заветная мечта у мальчишки того поколения, то это была бы возможность оказаться на съёмках «Пиратов» вместе с Талгатом Нигматулиным и Тадеушем Касьяновым. Картина «Советское карате» посвящена им и стилизована под самодельные плакаты и трафареты, которые были популярны на рубеже 70– 80-х годов прошлого века.

🇷🇺🤝🇿🇦 On 27 March 2026 the Embassy of Russia in South Africa representatives participated in the commemoration of the 29th anniversary of the establishment of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) at the North-West University (NWU), Mahikeng Campus.
The International #IORADay celebrations under the theme: “Strengthening Connections Amongst the People of IORA” were organized by the Department of International Relations and Cooperation and the NWU and saw the presence of senior South African Government officials, members of diplomatic corps, academia and students.
💬Vladimir Poluektov, First Secretary (Political), conveyed a welcome message by H.E. Mr Roman Ambarov, Russian Ambassador to South Africa, to the organizers and attendees of the meeting, as well as delivered remarks on the Russian inputs to IORA activities, including within the six priority areas and two cross-cutting issues of Association.
☝️He emphasised that Russia, being IORA Dialogue Partner since 2021(South Africa is a coordinator), considers the Association to be a very important platform to address shared challenges in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), advancing mutually beneficial cooperation, prosperity and sustainable development.
While acknowledging greater role of coastal areas and oceans as well as its resources for ensuring global and regional food and energy security, achieving SDGs, maritime security and safety, it was also stated that there's a need to increase IORA visibility in international affairs, boost public awareness of its activities.
🇷🇺❗️Russia stands in favour of practical depoliticized cooperation within IORAin order to prevent the Association from being dragged into any kind of block confrontation policies and to ensure its adherence to the principle that IORA should become a zone of peace, security and prosperity.

🔋From November 4 to 8, the Cape Town International Convention Centre will host the African Energy Week.
🇷🇺The Russian delegation will be headed by Deputy Energy Minister Roman Marshavin.
🤝 A Russia-Africa roundtable is scheduled for November 6. It will focus on opportunities for Russian companies in the African energy sector and strategic areas of cooperation between Russia and the continent.
⛽️ Several Russian companies will participate, including gas giant Gazprom, oil producer Lukoil, oil and gas equipment manufacturer Uralhimmash, as well as state-owned Sberbank.
💬 "Russia occupies a leading position among the world's largest energy systems in terms of low-carbon electricity generation, which is particularly important for African partners," Russian Presidential Advisor Anton Kobyakov said.
💬 "In the future, cooperation with Russia will only help strengthen Africa's energy sector," said NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber.
