June 13 — Birthday of Niki Daly (1946–2024)
🎨✍️ Niki Daly was one of South Africa’s most beloved children's book authors and illustrators. He dedicated his life to telling stories where South African children could see themselves — their culture, language, and everyday life — reflected on the page.
🧒 His Jamela series, featuring a lively little girl and her adventures in a South African town, gained international recognition and was translated into multiple languages. Yet in Russia, Niki Daly remains virtually unknown.
🌍 On his birthday, we remember a writer who brought joy, identity, and cultural pride to countless young readers. 🇿🇦

🇿🇦📖Jim may be tired of Jo’burg, but Yekaterinburg certainly isn’t tired of Jim!
📚 On August 22–24, the Red Line Book Festival (“Krasnaya Strokа”) — Yekaterinburg’s international book festival — will feature a new presentation of the Russian translation of Mzuvukile Maqetuka’s novel Jim Is Tired of Jo’burg.
📍The presentation format was discussed by representatives of the Office of the Honorary Consul of South Africa, translator Dr. Dmitry Pobedash (📸 right), and Dr. Aleksey Podchinyonov, the CEO of the Ural University Press (📸 left).
🗓 A year ago, an earlier presentation of translated chapters took place at the same festival:

## 📖VOICES THAT CHANGED THE WORLD: ETHIOPIA'S LITERARY GIANTS
## 📖ዓለምን የቀየሩ ድምፆች: የኢትዮጵያ ሥነ ጽሑፍ ግዙፎች
✍️ КОГДА СЛОВА СТАНОВЯТСЯ ИСТОРИЕЙ!
While others learned to write, Ethiopians were already creating literary masterpieces! 💫
📜 LEGENDS OF ETHIOPIAN LITERATURE:
✍️ TSEGAYE GABRE-MEDHIN (1936-2006)
*The Shakespeare of Ethiopia*
📖 His immortal lines every Ethiopian schoolchild knows:
"I am not I, but we are we, and Ethiopia is us"
"እኔ እኔ አይደለሁም፣ እኛ ግን እኛ ነን፣ ኢትዮጵያም እኛ ነን"
"Я не я, но мы есть мы, и Эфиопия - это мы"
✍️ HADDIS ALEMAYEHU (1910-2003)
*Father of modern Ethiopian novel*
📖 From his masterpiece "Fiker Eske Mekabir" (Love Until the Grave):
"Love is the language that all hearts understand, even when tongues differ"
"ፍቅር ሁሉም ልቦች የሚረዷት ቋንቋ ነው፤ ምላሶች የተለያዩ ቢሆኑም"
"Любовь - это язык, который понимают все сердца, даже когда языки различны"
✍️ SAHLE SELLASSIE (1936-1997)
*Chronicle of Ethiopian resilience*
📖 His powerful words about identity:
"We are children of the sun, born from ancient soil, carrying tomorrow in our hearts"
"እኛ የፀሐይ ልጆች ነን፣ ከጥንታዊ አፈር የተወለድንና ነገን በልባችን የምንሸከም"
"Мы - дети солнца, рожденные из древней земли, несущие завтра в наших сердцах"
✍️ BEWKETU SEYOUM
*Contemporary voice of Ethiopian youth*
📖 His modern poetry resonates in schools:
"Between yesterday's wisdom and tomorrow's dreams, we dance the rhythm of today"
"በትናንት ጥበብና በነገ ህልሞች መካከል የዛሬን ምት እንደንሳለን"
"Между мудростью вчера и мечтами завтра мы танцуем ритм сегодня"
✍️ GIRMA EGZIABHER
*Poet of the mountains*
📖 Lines carved in every Ethiopian heart:
"Our mountains don't just touch the sky - they hold up the heavens for Africa"
"ተራሮቻችን ሰማይን የሚነኩ ብቻ አይደሉም - ለአፍሪካ ሰማዮችን ይደግፋሉ"
"Наши горы не просто касаются неба - они поддерживают небеса для Африки"
🇷🇺 RUSSIAN CONNECTION - LITERARY BRIDGE:
The connection deepens: Ethiopian poets translated Pushkin's works into Amharic, while Russian translators brought Ethiopian poetry to Moscow. During Soviet era, literary exchanges created lasting friendships between writers.
Many Ethiopian students in Moscow wrote poetry comparing Ethiopian highlands to Russian steppes, finding universal themes of homeland love across cultures.
*Words that cross borders, hearts that speak the same language of beauty* 📚❤️
