Edible bird’s nests are made from hardened saliva of edible-nest swiftlets. They are harvested in limestone caves or special bird houses in Southeast Asia. People use them in bird’s nest soup in Chinese cuisine. The nests are rare and valuable. Oranges are not always naturally orange. In some places, they stay green even when ripe because of the weather. To make them look orange, farmers use either a safe red dye called Citrus Red No. 2 or treat the fruit with ethylene gas, which helps the skin change color faster. Lactose-free products have no lactose, the sugar in milk, so people with lactose intolerance can digest them easily. Dairy-free products have no milk or milk ingredients at all, good for people allergic to milk or who avoid animal products. Lactose-free is for lactose intolerance; dairy-free is for milk allergy or vegan diets. 🥛🚫🌱 @googlefactss #LactoseFree#DairyFree#Health#Nutrition#FoodFacts

Himalayan salt comes in several natural colors based on minerals inside the crystals. White salt has very few impurities. Pink salt gets its color from small amounts of iron oxide. Dark pink or red salt has higher iron content. Grey salt contains mixed minerals. Black salt contains sulfur compounds and has a strong egg-like smell used in South Asian cooking. 🧂🌈🔬 [Read more] @googlefactss #facts#science#salt#himalayansalt#minerals#foodfacts#didyouknow

In China, a street food called suodiu uses small stones stir-fried with spices. People suck the flavor off the stones and then spit them out. The stones are not meant to be eaten. The name *suodiu* means “suck and dispose.” 🪨🌶️🍴 [Source1] [Source2] @googlefactss #Suodiu#ChinaFood#StreetFood#FoodFacts#Offbeat#EatingTrends

Hákarl is a traditional Icelandic food made from fermented Greenland shark. The fresh shark meat is poisonous. It is buried with stones to press out fluids and left to ferment for weeks, then hung to dry for months. This process removes the poison and makes it safe to eat. It has a strong ammonia smell and fishy taste. People eat it in small cubes, sometimes with a drink called brennivín. Greenland sharks grow very slowly. They can live up to 400 years and reach sexual maturity around 150 years. Because of this and overfishing, their populations recover very slowly. The species is considered vulnerable, and hunting is unsustainable. Conservation groups are calling for protections to prevent the Greenland shark from becoming extinct. 🦈🇮🇸🥃 [Read more] @googlefactss #Hákarl#Iceland#FermentedShark#TraditionalFood#FoodFacts#GreenlandShark#Conservation
