In the 3rd century, a Roman historian named Sextus Julius Africanus said Jesus Christ was conceived on March 25. Counting nine months from that date means Jesus would be born on December 25. The church in Rome officially began celebrating Christmas on December 25 in the year 336, during Emperor Constantine’s rule. Some believe this date was chosen to replace older pagan festivals that happened around the same time. This helped make Christianity the main religion in the Roman Empire.
