News: Four #Ethiopians killed in #Johannesburg shooting, at least ten detained; Ethiopian officials await probe findings
Dessie Alebachew, chargé d’affaires at Ethiopia’s embassy in Pretoria, South Africa, told #Addis_Standard that the killings are part of a broader pattern of violence affecting foreign nationals.
“The killings didn’t just start now; they’ve been going on for a while. However, from time to time, the level and scale of the killings have been increasing,” she said. “The day before yesterday, one person was killed, making it a total of four people.”
Ten others, aged between 19 and 35 were also detained by local police in an operation targeting “spaza” shops in Mokwakwaila, Ga-Mokgwathi, and Ga-Ramotshinyadi villages.

News: #Absa Bank links #Ethiopia market entry to further easing of banking rules
Absa Group, a #Johannesburg-based multinational banking and financial services conglomerate, has said it would consider entering Ethiopia’s financial services market if the government further loosens ownership restrictions and deepens liberalisation of the banking sector, The EastAfrican reported.
The #South_African lender said recent reforms in Ethiopia’s banking sector are encouraging but remain insufficient to support a long-term commercial commitment in what it described as a tightly regulated market.
“We are closely following developments in Ethiopia and we think the first few necessary steps have been taken, but we would like to see more opening of the regulatory environment insofar as it relates to banking in that market,” Absa Group Chief Executive Officer Kenny Fihla told The EastAfrican during a visit to Nairobi this week.
“When we are of the view that we have the....

News: #Kenya’s KCB Group eyes #Ethiopia entry by 2026 through acquisition of local bank
Kenya’s banking giant, Kenya Commercial Bank (#KCB), says it is targeting entry into Ethiopia’s newly liberalizing banking sector before the end of 2026 and has already identified a potential local entity for acquisition.
The lender has narrowed down its shortlist of Ethiopian banks to a single target it believes offers the right “cultural and strategic fit” for expansion into the market.
The interest from KCB Group comes amid growing attention as Ethiopia gradually opens its banking sector to foreign participation.
In February this year, #Johannesburg-based #Absa Group said it would consider entering Ethiopia’s financial services market if authorities further loosen ownership restrictions and deepen liberalization of the sector.
The South African lender described recent reforms as encouraging but said they remain insufficient to support a long-term........

#South_Africa deploys soldiers to the streets to tackle organized and violent crime
Soldiers were deployed to the streets of South Africa’s biggest city Wednesday in an effort to help police fight gang violence and illegal mining.
It was the first major deployment since President Cyril #Ramaphosa said in his annual speech to the nation last month that he would use the army against organized crime, which he called the greatest threat to democracy and the country’s economic development.
Soldiers jumped from vehicles and entered apartment blocks as military vehicles moved through the #Riverlea and #Westbury suburbs of #Johannesburg.
Many residents of Riverlea expressed relief to see soldiers deployed to stem the violence.
One resident, Pearl Hilma, told The Associated Press that she supports the crackdown “because there’s lots of gangsterism as well as gunshots every night” in the neighborhood......

News: #Ethiopian community members in #South_Africa accuse home government of inaction as embassy says engaging authorities
Members of the Ethiopian community in South Africa have criticized what they describe as a lack of adequate protection and diplomatic response following recent killings of Ethiopian nationals in Johannesburg, even as #Ethiopia’s embassy in #Pretoria said it is engaging authorities and calling for stronger security measures.
The criticism follows a recent shooting in #Johannesburg in which four Ethiopians were killed, with Ethiopian officials saying they are awaiting the outcome of investigations by South African authorities.
Speaking to #Addis_Standard on condition of anonymity, a member of the Ethiopian Community in South Africa said the killings of Ethiopians, #Eritreans and #Somalis in South Africa are not new, but warned both the frequency and nature of the attacks appear to be worsening.

✈️O. R. Tambo International Airport 🇿🇦
🛫 It is South Africa's primary hub for domestic and international flights and, since 2020, has been Africa’s second busiest airport (after Cairo International Airport).
The airport serves as the main hub of South African Airways.
📜 Originally named Jan Smuts International Airport after the former South African Prime Minister, it was renamed Johannesburg International Airport in 1994, when the African National Congress (ANC) government decided not to name airports after political figures.
✳️ The policy was later reversed, and on October 27, 2006, the airport was renamed in honor of anti-apartheid leader Oliver Reginald Tambo (1917–1993).
